412hp!!! Is it true???
First off, hello to all the old BON guys - Boomer, Five Oh B, Brad, jsaylor et. al.
I drop by this site sometimes when a big Mustang event happens and this one is pretty huge I have to say. I've been following the Coyote news since the beginning with a lot of curiosity. And I remember all the discussion on BON many years back about the hope for a 5L to find its way into the S197, at least at some point. And now they finally did it. This is definitely a game changer for Ford. Hats off.
I'm a little surprised that no one has brought up the Lexus IS-F yet in this discussion as it presents an interesting comparison. That car happens to have a 5L V8 as well. The numbers are 416 hp @ 6600 RPM and 371 ft-lbs @ 5800 RPM. So ford has basically met and exceeded the specs of this motor, and this is a $60,000 luxury car we are comparing to. Performance wise, the Lexus 0-60 time is advertised at 4.8s and can do a 12.8s quarter mile. The car does weigh about 3800 lbs, I think the mustang will probably be at least 100 lbs less. Granted the IS-F has a very close ratio 8 speed automatic transmission, but I suspect that the Mustang will have more aggressive gearing. It is not clear what the max RPM of the Coyote is yet, but the IS-F has fuel shut off at 6800 IIRC. If the Coyote revs a bit higher - say to 7000 RPM, which incidentally Ford's last (in the USA, anyhow) naturally aspirated 4V V8 (in the 2001 Cobra) did - it should be capable of a bit more aggressive rear end gearing from the factory. Overall I think the cars will be similar in straight line performance, with the edge perhaps going to the Mustang. Oh, and the Lexus has EPA fuel economy of 16/23, less than the currently suggested 25 mpg highway figure for the Mustang.
Now my curiosity turns to the so called Road Runner. If ford has a high revving version of this motor then they will really have my full attention. We don't know bore/stroke of the Coyote yet, but I would love to see this thing hit 8000 RPM. That might sound overly optimistic, but 412 hp and 390 ft-lb was considered fantasy by a lot of people until recently.
Cheers

We (in Australia) will get this same motor, but in a different guise; supercharged. In a fat-****, heavy Falcon body.
Well done to Ford, they'll deliver what I believe is one of the most desirable - and affordable - packages on the market. And any market. Too bad this isn't rhd

im so curious lol, i was just talking to my father about the good news with the 5.0... he has an 1993 GT, so he is a big five-oh fan. there is actually a picture of my fathers car in the time line section of this site. its "robert plescovich's gt".
i wonder if the rear faux gas cap will have the 5.0 on it....

Apologies for taking the thread off-topic with that photo. Thanks for the clarification, I didn't realise Ford did export market specifications. Folding mirrors would be a great addition for us British as the current car is a tight fit in our garages with the current fixed mirrors!
Anyway, back to the '11

TT you might be able to order them. I know on the 05-09 JDM Mustang (sounds so weird saying that lol) had folding mirrors with signal repeaters on them like all the luxury cars these days. I believe folding mirrors with turn signal are required in Japan. They also had LED tailights over there. They were the same lights that were/are available in the aftermarket here, same ones on Vaughn Gittin Jr's Falken drifter.
This is great news on the Coyote! It was originally intended to come in under the 400hp level, but "late" developments put it over the mark. Believe me, it is capable of much more. Much like the older 5.0's, it is very reactive to tweaking. There are also some other goodies coming down the pipeline for this engine and car, not to mention the race program engine dubbed Road Runner and SE's/packages, etc. Curb weight has not yet been established but as time goes by, you'll see the Mustang lighten-up somewhat. The 2011 Mustang will also easily reach the 25MPG mark and in fact more, largely due to the new transmissions. This new engine will see the Mustang forward for quite a few years. It's a great time for Ford and Mustang enthusiasts alike!. The best is yet to come...........................
