Ford to discontinue V8
#401
Paul ! By any chance do you happen to remember that both the Lincoln LS and 2002-2005 Thunderbird had the 3.9L modular DOHC V8 ? it had variable cam timing and was rated at 280 HP/286LB torque.. All Ford would need to do is revive this engine and update it by adding a couple of turbos along with direct injection and I bet you could expect to see 475-500 HP easily with no problem.. Not only would this engine provide a definite reduction in weight, but would also be more fuel efficient as well

Gary ! I just realized I totally forgot all about the 3.9L DOHC V8 which was used in both the 2002-2005 Thunderbird and Lincoln LS..
All Ford would need to do to reduce weight is revive the 3.9L V8 and update it by including an aluminum block, along with direct injection and I bet this engine could get up to 40MPG highway with no problem..
Ford can also use this engine for future high performance variants as well such as the GT350/GT500, Mach 1 and so on by adding twin turbo and possibly flat plane crank technology for N/A applications..
Or another possible alternative, Ford could always revive the 4.2L DOHC V8 that was used for the Jaguar S-Type and update it in the same ways in which I just suggested for the 3.9L V8..
So yes, there's no question about it.. Ford definitely has the technology for keeping the V8 alive while at the same time making it more fuel efficient and lighter in weight

Not too sure about that. With the addition of twin turbos and all the plumbing and extra goodies. Probably not saving much weight. 500 hp can be reached much easier with displacement or just a simple supercharger. The American companies have always had problems with the V8's holding up with turbos. Not sure why but they just don't. Turbos are really cool and produce immense hp but there's just too many factors to keep them reliable. In 4 or 6 cyl form it seems a little easier to manage everything else that comes with a turbo set up. The supercharger set up seems still the smart way to go with the V8. No lag, stable air flow, less parts required, less exhaust restrictions. I don't believe we will see any TTV8's any time soon unless they buy the technology from Germany or Italy.
Or in the worst case scenario as you also mentioned, look into buying the technology from Germany or Italy as another possible alternative

Interesting fact
I can get 18.0mpg doing 100mph on the highway in my 5.8L supercharged Mustang or I can get 16.0mpg doing 100mph in my EB6 exploder
Exploder weighs more I guess and probably more drag different gearing too I guess
Shelby is doing about 1900 rpm in 6th at that speed
But still

In all seriousness I wonder how long Ford will keep the 3.7 in the Mustang lineup. It seems that the ecoboost is their new favorite toy so who knows what's going to happen.

I think the issue the V8 lovers (including myself) are thinking about but afraid to say is to retire the V8 from the Mustang would be the end of new, affordable V8 powered vehicles.
Once it's gone from the Mustang, it's not likely to stick around for the Camaro or Charger either, and let's face it, we all chose Mustang over those two for a specific reason anyway.
The thing that keeps me up at night with this thread is that without the V8 Mustang, I see a world where the only V8s are in BMWs, Lexuses and that other company.

Just give me a small turbo 8, if we must have turbos, and I'm good!

I've been mentioning the very same in this thread for quite sometime now and IMHO Ford knows full well that GM and Mopar will also be required to downsize as well in order to meet the gov't CAFE regulations, otherwise Ford would not take the risk of discontinuing it's V8 platform knowing full well that such a huge risk could result by losing up to at least half of their existing V8 customers over to the competition
