Would it be easier/cheaper to just drop in a different 302? I was thinking about rebuilding mine for a while, but when I was looking I found engines for almost the same price.
Too bad the Blazer's out of commission too.
And there's the shoestring budget I have
The other car needed a new control arm and tires, so my bonus turned into thin air

600 for a 302? I see them going for 200-300 most of the time. There aren't any junkyards that you can pull one from locally?
I've been checking the online ads from time to time for cheap parts cars or engines. They appear from time to time. One time there was a Mark VIII very cheap. 4.6L DOHC would be
I'm thinking of getting a small loan ($1000-2000) to fix this thing, but I'm not sure if I'll do that.

Updare!!
Prepared the place where the engine will be removed out of the car and moved it there today. It started right up
Drained the coolant and motor oil. While draining the oil I noticed something weird. Some blobby stuff came out in gushes. My guess is metal debris from either the rods, pistons or the crank, or all of them. The upper plenum is out,as well as the acc. belt, CCRM, rad. fan & hoses, distributor, ignition coil, and loosened the harmonic balancer bolt. I also started removing the right header bolts. Good progress so far.
Made some more progress today. Downpipes are disconnected, starter, air tubes and right reader w spark plugs are out too.

Shouldn't be too much of a push now. I basically tore it down to the point where only the engine mounts were holding the motor in when I was doing the head swap, and the starter/bellhousing when I did the clutch, so I know exactly where you are. I'm not sure if you have gotten the A/C quick releases figured out, but go with the "cage" kind, and not the kind that just slip in one side. Trust me.

Note how restrictive the stock headers are.

The engine's out! Bought an engine stand today so I don't want to wait for someone to lend or rent me one. Tomorrow I'll get some long bolts to place the engine on the stand and start tearing it apart.

cha-ching!
