Has anyone tried a My-Color GT cluster in a V6??? The pin-outs are identical. The only thing I'm worried about is the tach. If it does work, it seems that if you're going to buy a new cluster for a V6, why not "upgrade" another notch and buy the GT cluster....

In any case, I'm buying the GT500 cluster for my GT and I'm going to try the GT cluster in my wife's non-My-Color V6 in about one month or so....

Both cars are completed and both function well.

All wiring was present in my particular 2005 GT Auto Application.

The install will need to be performed by a dealership as the Information in the existing cluster will have to be downloaded and reloaded into the existing cluster.
The info must be downloaded from the old cluster before removing old cluster.

It was a simple operation on my particular application. And no difficulties were encountered. WARNING RESULTS MAY VARY!

In order for you Dealer to get you a cluster you will need current mileage and your complete vehicle vin #. Mileage is programmed at cluster center.

There are different IUP clusters for v6 & v8 applications and also depending on your vehicle bulid date! If you attempt to use a v8 cluster in a v6 most likely your tach will not funtion correctly.

When your Dealer orders the cluster from their authorized cluster replacement center have them state that they are doing an Upgrade and verify they will accept the standard cluster as a core. The Core could get expensive!

I do not have exact pricing on this conversion but would estimate it at $450.00 to $600.00 installed depending on your dealers pricing and labor rate!

FYI

WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FORD MAY BE DELETING THE WIRING FOR THE MYCOLOR SWITCH ON THE MUSTANGS! PULL YOUR BLOCK OFF PLATE AND CHECK FOR WIRING PLUGGED INTO DUMMY BEZEL BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS! 04/19/05 IT IS POSSIBLE IT IS TUCKED OR TAPED INTO LOOM BUT YOU WILL NEED TO VERIFY IT'S THERE FOR A SUCCESSFULL CONVERSION.
[attachmentid=18588]

I sent a Parts Inquiry to ford today to check on the Plug issue 06/21/05 It seems a Subharness used on very Basic equipped Stangs may be left out simply as a cost cutting tool. So You need to check your wiring plug before attempting the IUP Message center upgrade. The Harness cannot be purchased separately. 08/03/05
If you do not have Traction Control you Most Likely do not have the IUP PLUG!

Hey 05Stangkc,
I just purchased an 2006 V6 mustang. I just found out that you can change the colors of the dash but you have to have that option. I only have the dummy buttons. I was wondering if you could help me to figure out how to install another cluster or what I need to do to get this option. Thank you!

First, pry off the dummy spacer plate. I used a small flat-blade screwdriver until it popped out. If there is a wiring connector plugged into the back of the spacer, you're in luck. Your car is pre-wired. You can add the My-Color cluster. It's plug and play. If you do not have the wiring, you're out of luck.

If your car is pre-wired and you decide to go with a My-Color cluster, you'll also get a functioning message center. Also, you may opt to go with a GT cluster or even a GT500 unit. As long as the dealership downloads the info from your original cluster and uploads it onto the replacement, all gauges will work. Unless you get the GT500 cluster. The boost gauge will not.

Then it's a piece of cake. You need to buy the message center three-button switch and a cluster. The dealership you buy the cluster from will need your VIN and mileage. Have the dealership install the cluster. This is absolutely necessary so they can transfer data from your existing cluster to the new unit. As for the switch, install it yourself. Everything will work then.

Mycolor swap

Been to busy to gather info. and try this mod.
However I did talk to my dealership, twice now. They were interested but skeptical. Second time I asked again(when buying oil/filter) and the guy sed he asked about it in his ford tech forums, or something and the reply was "don't even try it"
Now, Im thinking this guy doesn't want to stick his neck out, and cause grief to all involved... I told him I read about it on the net, he scoffed and said, "well the internet is the internet, not always true"
From what I read here, and know of electronics, don't think everyone is lying, LOL Yes I have the wiring.
I shall keep trying, my warranty isn't extended so I can wait. Also can visit other dealerships, and see what they say... If worst comes to worst, some aftermarket pods(prolly more accurate), cept I want the message center, it has some cool options, the Mycolor thing would just be a bonus.
Like a buddy told me, he couldn't beleive Ford put out a Mustang GT without a normal full guage package. Makes me think of the baseline 80's models, full of dummy lights, lol wish I got that ****ed IUP.
Glad I have the correct pn's needed, eventually I will have this option, I hope!
mebbe I will have to let KC talk to them!

Just don't give up is all I have to say - I was worried the shop at the dealership I got my car from might not want to try it, but they had no problems with the swap, the only problem we ran into was finding the correct part number and an email to Kevin (bows to the master) solved that problem. They ordered the cluster, it came in and was installed in an hour and I was on my way. Works beautifully! Thanks again Kevin!

Order is In.....

Well I just made the order for the cluster and switch. Cluster = $ 248.00 ($ 300.00 core), Switch = $36.00. With the exchange rate on the dollar I figure this was a good time to do it. The Ford dealer here in Victoria wanted $ 361.00 for the cluster ($450.00 core) and $115.00 for the switch !!! By the time Its done and I get my $300.00 core charge back the total should come in under $500.00 !! Hopefully it arrives OK, it's coming all the way from Sherman TX. Now the wait begins....It's just like Christmas !!

Thanks to all in this thread that have offered all their knowledge. Especially 05stangkc !! I will update when the conversion is done.

Are the part numbers available yet for the 2008 Mustangs. I just bought a 2008 GT/CS and would really love to do this conversion. By the way, I checked and do have the connector.

Should I just buy from the dealer or should I go through someone else on the internet? I havn't had a lot of luck with the dealers here in Illinois.

Thanks!

Den

$248 seems a tad high to me. This is because I bought the GT500 cluster from Steve @ Tousley Ford for $223.

On another note, for all you V6 guys, consider buying the GT cluster. It doesn't cost any more and it works on a V6. I've done it.

Do you think would also work since I have a V6 and wanted to get the GT cluster? I just hate having a sports car and the speedometer only reads 120mph. I mean my wifes Civic reads 150 and mystang only reads 120.
What would need to be done for that swap?

Yes, on a V6 you have a choice. Go with a V6 cluster or "upgrade" to the 140-mph, four-gauge GT cluster. Once the data is uploaded from your current cluster and downloaded to the new V6 or GT cluster, all gauges function correctly. So there's no extra "work" involved. The "data" must include items such as number of cylinders (for the tach to read correctly), gauges in lieu of idiot lights, etc. No sending units need to be replaced!!

Like I said before, I know this is true because I put my GT cluster out of my GT into my wife's V6 and it works!
