Powder Coating Cam Covers

If we get enough people together to do it, I could buy a set of new cam covers (around $400 according to my local stealership), and have them as the first core, so your car's down time would only be a few hours to swap out the covers, then send in your stockers to get powerder coated for the next guy. Since everybody has cam covers less than a year old, they should all be in good shape.
But we'd probably need to get atleast 10 people for this, so the core fee would be about 40 bucks apiece. I figure it'll take a week to do each set, counting shipping, process, and delays (ie someone not shipping back their ugly stockers the next day), it would take me about 3 months for me to make my money back from the initial investment.
So figure:
$65 powder coat
$34 core fee (non refundable)
shipping and insurance, less than 20 bucks?
So for $99 bucks plus shipping, you could get your cam covers powder coated. Sure, I'll be making some money off of each set, but it's going to take 3 months just to get my inital investment back from buying the first set. And considering if someone decides not to send in their cam covers back, or someone sends in a bent/damaged set, and many trips to the post office and over to the powdercoater's place, it's probably going to be more of a pain than anything else.
But if enough people want to do this, we could make it happen.
Also, he has many colors available. I don't think he can do and exact match for all stock colors, like Mineral Grey or Redfire, but he could do Grey and Maroon.
He can also do wrinkle coat, anodized, candy, mirror, and metallic colors. Like I said, no guaranteed exact match.
Here's an example of some of his work:
James, that's the gold he did last week.

I just got in the cam covers, so taking them over to Kevin's right now!
Just a reminder, please pack the covers so the aluminim 'hoses' are protected, since they can bend really easy. Putting a block of styrofoam around them would be great. Also, please clean out your cam covers before returning them, so oil doesn't leak throughout The Box.
Also, another reminder, these cam covers will not have a PERFECT Show Car finish. Expect some flaws, runs, fish eyes, thin spots, etc. If you are looking for the perfect show car finish, these will not make you happy. But if you want something that looks much better than stock, and more durable than paint, this may be what you are looking for. I stated this back on post #101, but just wanted to remind everyone.
Thanks again for all the kind words and help in making this happen,

Brad,
Can you tell me what material the valve covers are made of? I have already had my done as one of the first six or so, however, a friend of mine has called two dealer service managers and received two different answers. One said they are aluminum and another thought they might be plastic (idiot). I understood them to be manufactured from a magnesium alloy? What does your powder coater say? Thanks for the info assist. By the way, my covers are holding up very well and everyone says that is what Ford should have originally done. It's amazing this project still has legs. Thanks for setting it up.

The three-valve heads are smaller than the previous two-valve heads, reducing weight. They also offer a more direct, "ported" style path to the valves for better air flow at peak engine speeds. Magnesium cam covers suppress valve train noise and reduce weight. Taking weight out at the top of the engine helps lower the car’s center of gravity and its roll-center axis, improving handling.

I remember seeing MgAL (and some other element) stamped somewhere on the inside of the cam covers, which means it's got magnesium and aluminum in it, so I guess they are both right.
Glad to hear your covers are still looking great. Mine are looking as good as the day I put them on as well, and they were the first set.
It's the great community here at TMS and people like you that has kept this project going for so long. I'm just trying to help people make there car look better, and fix what to me is the most unattractive part of the best car for the money on the road today.
Thanks again!

I'm not sure we have an exact match to the Ford plenum cover, looks like a cross between Mineral Grey and Tungsten, and seems to match the color of the stock Bullitt wheels pretty well. Can't guarantee an exact match, but I'm sure Kevin could come up with something close. I also have a Ford Plenum cover on order, and should be here in a few weeks, so I'll show it to Kevin and see what he thinks might work. Custom color matching is possible, but expensive.
Thanks for the interest.

Thanks for the link hatch.
I checked my settings and it set to allow pics, jsut changed it the other day. Not that I go back thru the posts I do see some pics, maybe the missing ones just dont exist anymore. That Chrome Mirror finish looks great.
Keep me/us posted in the color match of the plenum cover, that would be the hot ticket.
Thanks
