just make sure to grind all of the rusty metal away before you cover it, otherwise it will resurface....

 

yeah, I ground it down until I saw regular shiny steel, and then coated with anti rust paint (the same paint thats gonna eventually cover the whole car)

Only after all that did I apply the patch panel and bondo

 

this is starting to remind me of that thread about the Unique Performance Eleanors that were "restored".....bondo rific and restored by convicts...haha

As for weight reduction, I have an idea. Alot of guys get fiberglass bumpers, trim them so they fit the body close and remove the heavy **** steel bits. They save weight and gain in the looks dept.

Now, I'm not toooo keen on completely abandoning bumpers. I don't drive this car thaaat much, but I have a feeling I'm going to start once she's done. I'm thinking of just a single plate of relatively thick steel to connect to two bumper supports on each side, and then mounting the (heavily trimmed) original urethane bumpers back on over those plates. It'll be just as structurally sound as an original 60s metal bumper would have been, but alot better looking. I think its a pretty good compromise

 

I'd really have to see it. I would definitely be for the weight reduction, but the looks is the most important.

 

Got alot more sanding done, and repaired the spoiler too. First we epoxied, and then after that set, i applied more bondo.

Now, I know its a concern, so just so you all know, I am not just gobbing bondo on and then shaping it lol. I apply alot at first so I have lots to work with, and then I sand down to a very thin layer. You'll see on the left side of the middle section of the spoiler, I actually didn't have enough bondo, so it cracked. Thats why theres a fresh glob there.

I also filled in the seams on the header panel. I think it'll look nice when its painted. The car is almost entirely done bodywise. The tail area needs a bit more sanding, and that final glob smoothed out. After that I just need to tackle the bumper situation, and its set

I haven't been able to post in a while but its good to see your II coming along. I like the look of it without the bumpers. It would be sweet if you were able to make them look better before you put them on.

Are you planning on painting the trim around the headlights? I think it would look good but I dont know for sure.

 

The headlight trim is definitely going back on, the bumpers are the only thing I'm still thinking about. I'm going to trim them up and see how they look. But I don't think they'll be perfect. I'm debating making custom ones out of sheetmetal, but thas allottaa dolaaarrrrssss

 

Arin, have you ever considered buying a repro GT350R front bumper and altering/narrowing it to fit your car? Add a roll pan in the back to continue the theme in the rear and you would have a pretty mean looking little GT350 II. Heck, throw in some fender flares and a Shelby style hood scoop and you really would have a sort of mini GT350. IIRC Car Craft/HRM, or PHR had a guy do a rendering very similar to this several years ago and it should look pretty choice in the flesh.

 

I've definitely considered it. In fact, its in my long term plan. The only reason they aren't in the mail right now is funds.

I'm gonna try the trimmed stockers first, and those will stay in place until I can afford better.

For the hood scoop, well, theres a flat black Mr Gasket in the mail right now, so no shelby scoop. I'm kind of playing on the Mad Max look.

Fender flares though, are a great idea, but I don't have the money to get the proper wheels and tires to adequately fill them up. I'll put those on the list of things I need to do eventually though.

Now, it doesn't look perfect. There are some areas that have deep scratches that need some work done and there are a few spots where I messed up and it ran a little...

BUT

I really like the way it turned out. It looks happy and it looks mean. I didn't do the hood bec the carb scoop isn't here yet and the bumpers need to be worked out, but I'll get to that when I get to that. For now, enjoy the pichas
