update. got moat of the work dobe today. had to grind a little triangle out of the bracket to make the 159 amp 3g fit. my battery is in yhe back so i had to wire the power to the starter solenoid. but i noticed a problem after rubbing it just a few seconds. looked under the hood because something smelled bad. turns out the white wire that runs from the alt to the large connector (with the two big black wires that get loop connectors and attached to the terminal on the alt) completely burned up. the insulation was totally melted and the wire itaelf was brittle and snapped when I touched it. ia ttached some pics.

as for a detailed list of what i did:
spliced in a new D connector since the old one was broken and cracked. connected white to white, green to green and yellow to yellow as per instructions. i used blade connectors to get them together properly.

cutt he large connector off and put the loop fastenrs on the two black wires, as per instruction

took the white wire that came with the 3g and attached to the white wire kn large connector. blade connectors again. this is the wire that fried

ran the heavy duty cable from power terminal on alt to the positive terminal on the starter solenoid.

can anyone tell me what id id wrong? i hope the pics help, it was hard to get this stupid phone to focus on the wires.

Ok so after some research I found this page
http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-foru...lation.723955/

The first image says that the two black with orange wires are NOT supposed to be reconnected this I guess is what happens when you order the alt and fused power wire separately and thus receive different instructions. I disconnected the battery before coming inside but first thing tomorrow morning I'm going to fix that and undo them as well as see if the white cable's connector is salvageable. If not then I have to order one of those too

Someday, somehow, I will install a part and it will work on the first try

Took off the two black/orange wires today and taped them off. Replaced the majority of the fried wire (the connector still looked intact and the wire was still strong and attached there) and started her up. Ran mostly just fine.

Two new things happened though. First, my tach, which had worked prior to the swap, stopped again. I think I'm going to go over those connections again now that I bought a better ratcheting crimper.

Second, the engine side electric fan stopped working Although, strangely enough, it took a while to get warm this time, but shot up quickly once it did. The underhood temps stayed more reasonable until about 15 minutes then everythign started to skyrocket.

I did also notice a few drops of coolant below the angled part of the thermostat, will be monitoring to see how bad it is. it wasn't there before, im assuming, because most of it was escaping through the crack in the overflow tank cap instead.

time to do more thinking...

Well these breaks are pretty much the only time I have to tinker lol, so I gotta spend the entire time doing all the things I've been putting off

Plus it would just be so nice to get this car to DD status. If it were reliable enough for any drive I could finally get started on the Bullitt's bodywork issues.

If you can, (crimp and) solder the wires to your connectors. Follow up with heat shrink tubing or liquid electrical tape. Much more reliable.

So the shop (Paul's Automotive Engineering) that works on my Mach, has a CLEAN '77 (4-Speed) II (2.3 or 2.8 I believe) in the shop and the owner is thinking about a 2.0 EcoBoost swap. I'll keep you posted if I get updates. Should be a darn cool project!

This is the same shop that is also working on a King Cobra (attached and I think I posted a photo before) and the owner (Paul) has a mini-tubbed II with a 347 and widened Anniversary Cobra wheels.

Seems weird for anyone named Paul to be associated with IIs Maybe its just me lol

But SCHWEEET Ever since the 2.0 Ecoboost was announced I've secretly wished I hadn't bothered to go EFI 5.0. Especially since so many more people on the II forums have swapped in SVO/TC motors as well. Moar powah, less weight, better MPG, . That thing would just be a freakin rocket in that car.

Just pointing out that, from a technical standpoint, nothing is stopping you from swapping engines if you so choose...

"technically" no there isn't lol. "financially" there is quite a deal :P Unfortunately for me design school is taking me longer than previously anticipated, which means real work is further delayed which in turn means that the ability to devote significant cash towards my projects is limited

the moment i have full time work though... this car is going to go ing nuts

No new parts or expected updates, but one unexpected one.

I finally sold some spare gun/car parts I had laying around (some even dated back to that camaro lol) and ordered myself one of these babies:

nothing fancy, just a 90amp flux welder. I want to try and start patching small areas of sheetmetal rust on the II. Plus this one uses a regular wall outlet so I can just start right away. Also allows me to start making small brackets and things to hang the bumpers I'm working on.

Also ordered an autodimming mask.

Most excellent. A welder is always a needed tool for projects.
