Yep, I know. Thanks for that, though.

GM is putting a 420 hp and 430# at 3500 rmps Turbo 6 in the new CTS. Further, it's operating in conjunction with a automatic 8 speed transmission. I know it's been discussed to death, but modern tech is doing some amazing things with smaller displacement engines.

I can't imagine that this thing will have an engine note as pleasing as the 5.0, but I will be anxious to hear it and to see if Ford decides to do something similar. So how about base na 6 or eco 4 at around 300 ponies. GT...Ecoboost turning 400 plus, Mach 1...5.8 coyote doing 470 or so and the 5.8 forced induction turning just short of 700. It will be interesting to see what happens.

The new 8 speed GM is using Is something them and Ford have been working together on IIRC. The new CTS turbo 6 os an animal is those numbers are right (and not saying theryre wrong by any means).

Itd be nice to see the Mach 1 return but in my mind with the 50th anni. And Global release on the line, its time to usher in a new name in the stable. Something to acknowledge the significance of the new model. Something fresh, new, but the blood running through its veins is pure Mustang. Maybe SVT will churn out a factory monster that not only dominates in straight line speed for its class, but also around a track as well. Only time will tell

Ford and GM are working on 9- and 10-speed automatic transmissions, rumored to be released in MY 2016 or '17. GM's 8-speed automatic transmission is sourced from Aisin and isn't offered in any of Ford's vehicles.

Without Googling, I can't remember what 8-speed transmission BMW uses at the moment, but it's getting rave reviews. Even on the M135i that we get over here.......their smallest car with a turbo straight six.......the 8-speed is a perfect match and even the enthusiast magazines seem to prefer it over the manual.

Not only that, but it seems to improve economy and lower Co2 emissions. A win-win.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Ford/GM 9/10 speeds perform in a few years.

I just hope we dont go past 6 speeds for manuals. 7 could work with reverse next to 5th but not much further than that

For all we know there may not be manual transmissions around within the next few years.. If these 8, 9 and 10 speed automatics are so far superior and efficient, then IMHO our manual transmissions as we know them are going to wind up as useless and obsolete..

I also don't think a 7 speed manual would really make much of a difference over the current 6 speed manual either.. Just my $.02

Those transmissions are also becoming more expensive. So I wouldn't say manuals are going to disappear just yet.

I think they will keep making the manual transmission just bc they are so much cheaper. And there are still a lot of people that like to shift their own gears. Even if the autos are becoming faster and more consistent.

This
No matter how efficient or fast the new automatics get, theres always gonna be that select group of buyers (myself included) that wont rest easy knowing the manual transmission is obsolete and gone

Count me in the latter group. I'm not an F1 driver so I don't need to shift 3/100ths faster or whatever is does, I just like the feeling of being a part of the driving experience.

I also think people have been saying the manuals days are numbered since after the automatic was introduced

Count me in as well, as I don't care how fast or efficient these new automatics become with either dual clutch or 8,9,10 speeds or whatever.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no greater driving experience over shifting your own gears..

Automatics really take alot out of the driving experience. Yea theres the first few you can control and also those "manumatic" can go through all gears but its just not the same. Youre not puttin those gears into place yourself, machines are. And to me, the real ride begins when you take the reigns into your own hands and you let that beast go!

I wonder though, the GT500 has been offered with ONLY a manual in its years...
Will this change soon with the next top level mustang?

If they did, I could see them going with a sequential before a full on Auto.

In this iteration. You could get the first/second gen GT500s in auto.

There's a whole generation of buyers who will prefer the video game interface of flappy paddles over a manual and clutch pedal.
