Ford called me back and I told them to start the lemon buyback process. Its funny not 10 minutes after I did that the dealer called said they were putting it together today and would test drive it this afternoon.

Damnedest thing. The dealer just called tech drove my car and said it has no vibration or noise now after the rebuild. They asked me to get it tomorrow because they are having a glass company come to remove my rear view mirror to make sure they don't crack the windshield

How would the glass have gotten cracked? From the mirror rattling?

Do me a favor. Please talk to the tech and find out what the heck happened to cause this. I don't want to end up with a new ring and pinion without a fix.

Did they also replace the axles, or just the axle bearings?

BTW, who called you that you talked to about starting the buy back process?

the glass is not cracked they dont want to crack it taking the mirror off so they are having a glass company do it. He said the ring an pinion fixed the issue but I will find out when I go there. the tech is going for a test drive with me. I had called Leon (ford CSR) to find out about them making a payment because they have had the car as much as me, more of a statement to them than actually wanting the cash, and made him call the area engineer to see when he would look at my car. That is when I found out the area engineer was not going to be here for a week or two and I kind of flipped out. I told leon to start the buyback process so that I could be done with this. That is when Leon I guess got authorization for the dealer to skip the engineer and just put it together.

Why does the mirror have to come off?

BTW, Leon submitted the same thing for me yesterday. And yes, it was out of principle if nothing else.

he told me they dont have a way of making payments for people. I am gonna fight them on it just to do it I guess. the vibration in the car has caused the rear view mirror to become loose. It shakes at any speed

ok just got home with her and I will say its a lot better. Not perfect but a lot better. I have a whine at 80-85 but it is very quiet. I did feel some vibration but it is cold out and the roads are wet from the rain so I want to see how she does when it warms up and the tires can get up to speed. the tires they used on the track pack cars do flatspot from sitting and she sat for 2 weeks

That sounds promising. What else did the tech have to say about the cause? Also, please post when you run it on a warm day.

got a lot of video to watch. What I have seen. I dropped it off on 3/9 at 925 AM. At 1134 he took it for a test drive. At 1204 he got to his HOUSE for lunch. Then at 1250 he got in the car to take it back to the shop. at 1246 he parked it. The car did not move from that spot util 3/16 at 139PM. So all the said last week was BS. They didnt do a ton of diagnostic work because they told me they ordered the parts Thursday 3/12 and all he did was drive it for a test drive to his house for lunch.

I had the same problem with my new /14 v6 3.73 gear auto. I took mine back to the selling dealer, he hooked it to some machine that has sensors and microphones and was told that the car vibrates at 82Hz (?). Was told that ford had a problem a few years back with that axle and back then they built them with mounting bolt hols for a counterweight block (one each side) and guess what? they are still there. He ordered the weight kit, put them on and the vibration has been reduced by 80%. the remaining vibration is above my local speed limit any way, so I can live with it. M.

Where are those weights located on the housing? Curious if mine has them as I have read some have them from the factory and some don't.

Kelty, I am still not clear why they called in an engineer or what caused the improper wear on the ring gear. What did the tech have to say about it?

Rear end is a hell of a lot better. Slight whine from 80-85 other than, that smooth as silk
The tech said he didn't measure backlash before disassembly. I looked at the gears and from what I cld see it looked like back backlash, caused some deflection (vibration) and that left chatter marks on the gears

The weights are mounted on the top of the axle near the shocks on both sides.
