Dream of U.S. energy independence was just revised away
Opinion: Most of the shale oil we were counting on doesn’t exist
A recently as this week, the much-publicized Monterey formation accounted for nearly two-thirds of all technically recoverable U.S. shale oil resources, standing at a world-class 13.7 billion barrels. But on Wednesday, that estimate was downgraded to a mere 600 million barrels, or 96% lower than the day before.
You read that right: 96% lower. This takes the Monterey from one of the world’s largest potential fields to a play that, if all 600 million barrels thought to be there were brought to the surface all at once, would supply the U.S.’s oil needs for a mere 33 days.
Yep. 33 days.
And along with that oil come tremendous water demands, environmental, and infrastructure damages.

Better get that Keystone Pipeline built, pronto.
John Newman
The only thing keeping the U.S. from being an independent, net exporter of energy are the environmental wackos that currently control the U.S. government.
The Keystone Pipeline, offshore drilling, natural gas and coal could transform this country and its economy to be more stable and productive overnight.
Stan Eddy
@John Newman The Keystone oil is Canadian oil, which is to be only transported and refined in the U.S. before being sold to foreign countries outside the U.S. Someone will get the jobs to build the pipeline and refine the oil here in the U.S. Who knows who will receive the on-going transmission pipeline charges and refining revenue? Multi-national corporations with their headquarters outside the U.S. or 100% sovereign (foreign) countries most likely, ultimately, if not so at present. Keystone oil will not count much, if at all, towards U.S. independence.
Fred Johnson
@Stan Eddy @John Newman The refined product will be sold to the highest bidders. Could be USA, could be other Countries.
John Hemmer
@Stan Eddy @John Newman But it will create U.S. jobs.

Here's the crux - "And along with that oil come tremendous water demands, environmental, and infrastructure damages"
You have to be kidding me? Did anyone with half a brain ever think Kalifornica was ever going to allow fossil fuel development at ANY level of benefit to anyone?
Stephen Allen
@John Newman
We were hoping they wouldn't.
The quote says it all.
We don't need that kind of crap!
Fred Johnson
@Stephen Allen @John Newman Oh, you don't?
Then why does your State have traffic jams up your A$$?

Looks like a case of Beaver fever in the Beaver State.
I'm not so sure the libtard Portlanders even know how to boil water.
Portland issues boil water notice for the entire city after E. coli detected in 3 tests
May 23, 2014
Routine inspections at two of the city's Mt. Tabor reservoirs produced the three positive E. coli tests. City employees performed the tests, according to Jaymee Cuti, bureau spokesperson.
State officials said the tests showed signs of fecal matter.
The boil notice applies to 670,000 customers, according to Cuti. Portland supplies drinking water to 935,000 customers in the metro region.
City officials hosted an emergency press conference at noon.
"While we believe at this time that the potential health risk is relatively small, we take any contamination seriously and are taking every precaution to protect public health," said Portland Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff in the release.
The Oregonian will be there and this story will continue to be updated.
Cuti said the boil notice will be in effect until the city produces "a clean sample." Cuti said she has no idea when that might be.

Weren't they recently in the news because some guy jumped the fence and pissed in the reservoir? Which seems really messed up that they use an open pool for drinking water. Who does that? All of ours is pumped into tower tanks that are closed. And I still refuse to drink it. Don't even use the ice in the fridge which is filtered.
