Ford to discontinue V8
#261
Ford will not discontinue the V8. YOU WILL.
Ford will make a V6 eco that performs better than the current Coyote. They will give you the option of a top-end V6 eco, or a less performing old-school V8 for slightly less $$.
After a 3-5 years, when everyone is on the V6 eco train, the V8 will be discontinued because the customers didn't want it anymore.
That's my prediction - the most graceful exit they can make from the V8.

IMO it also wouldn't make any sense for Ford killing off the V8 engine in just 2 years from now, after just recently introducing they're all new 5.2L flat plane V8 for the upcoming 2016 Shelby GT350.. It just wouldn't add up at all especially after all the R&D costs it took for development

I know Chrysler even stated they are working on their own powerful Turbo V6 Pentastar engine to be used in future projects, making some people suspicious thinking that they might replace the 5.7 Hemi, as there are no plans to improve upon that engine ,which is kind of lacking power by today's standards , so I dont think we are far of from seeing Challenger, Mustang, then most likely Camaro battle it out with Turbo V6s.
I guess 2018-2020 will be the time where this might be the scenario.

The 5.8 is done. It's based on the old modular platform, and if the GT wasn't released with it, it won't be used again. May it rest in peace.

I think we need for Ford to chime in. All this speculation by us is interesting but pointless for now. Yes the new GT and Raptor both sport a V6TT. I think Ford has lots of headroom to develop the flat plane V8 as a replacement for the current Coyote.

Although the current 5.0 Coyote is going on it's 5th year of production, I wouldn't consider it as being obsolete by any means, at least not just yet anyhow.. And now with the addition of the all new flat plane 5.2L that was just recently introduced, Ford should at least plan on keeping it around for at least the next 5-6 years ? Plus they can always add direct injection to make it even more fuel efficient as well

As for direct injection, I imagine it is more involved than just "adding it".
The R&D required to make changes to these engines must cost a lot, I would think they need to test each change in various conditions, run hundreds of engines 24/7 to wear them out and find the weak points, etc.
If you're building a million such engines a year, then $100 million R&D is only $100 per engine. If you're building 10,000 such engines a year, then it is way too much.
Volume, I suspect, is everything in the car business.

I also fully agree with Patrick's post, as the current Coyote does indeed have tons of advance technology with lots of room to grow as well, but also as he said.. We don't work for Ford either

Supposed Source Inside Ford Confirms It
I'm still taking it with a grain of salt, but apparently horsepowerkings.com has a source inside Ford confirming the V8's demise...
