Jim,

Would this be the correct wire harness? It's only $28.

Hopefully it is, much cheaper than $300

Unfortunately, no. It is the main dash harness you are after. This is not it.

Gettong lots of PMs asking me how it went.

I haven't done it yet. I'm gone this weekend, so I may be able to do this the weekend after.

As soon as I get to this, I'll let everyone know. Right now, my prioroty is winter tires.

Cheers

Sorry I didn't post.

Plenty of headaches, but all weather related. Had a huge dumping of snow up here, and temps took a big drop. Decided on to wait until next weekend as temps wil be warmer. I have to do this in my in-laws' garage, but it is not heated.

OK, so I finally installed the nav today.

I can confirm that it does indeed work.

A couple of things of note:

You MUST have the harness, and the dash will need to come out to switch the harnesses. When taking the dash out, the A pillar trim and sill trim have to come out.

The side panels on the dash have to be poped out from the INSIDE or you'll break the tabs.

Take off the steering wheel.

REMOVE THE SHIFTER! I can't stress this enough. You will have a godawful time getting the dash out otherwise.

Remove glove box and other trim.

I suppose you could try stripping the dash down and switching harnesses without removing the dash, but it be really interesting to snake your arms into all those nooks and crannies to get at it. Better to remove the dash.

Also, the sun sensor plug does not match the sun sensor, so I will have to get the proper one. Right now I just have the plug poking up throught he hole where the sensor should go (I removed it).

Proper amp will be needed.

Be sure to also get the Antennae and GPS(?) wires as well as the harness.

As for how it works, I am quite pleased, but as I said, volume is really low, and I also have the same issue that Yellow302 had - the temp controls are backwards. Hot is cold and vis versa. I will be looking into programming to correct this, but not anytime soon.

I spent a total of $850 for what I have.

I do have a 2010 nav harness, by the way. I'll put it on Ebay for $100 and see if it sells. I'll also be selling the old stereo, face plate and display.

The sun sensor for a nav car does indeed seem to be different according to my wiring diagrams. I'll pick one up later on. There is a sensor for the manual A/C and a different sensor for the automatic A/C (which is what the nav is).

As of right now, I just have it sticking up through the opening.

Got an email back from Yellow302. He did not remove the dash, but removed all the panels, air bag, modules etc... . So you can do this without taking out the dash - but removing it will give you WAY better access to the harness, I promise you that.

From a PM:

Great job Jim!!! Will I need to remove the shifter as I have a manual which sits much lower?

My biggest question, was this extremely difficult and time consuming?

So glad you were able to accomplish this!! Congrats and cheers!!
If you can get the shifter out, then take it out. Makes life much easier when manouvering the dash in the car to get it out and back in. It is not hard, as I followed the Ford instructions on removal, but it took me a good half day - and you need a second person to help.

If removing the dash is a bit intimidating, then you can do what Yellow302 did and remove everything that you can on the dash and try switching it out that way. Some of the plugs are in the back and up high. These will be tricky to get at. The toughest would be getting at the sun sensor on the defrost vents. I have no idea how you can get at that one. The vent itself does pop off, but I took it off from the inside in order to not break the tabs, or break the grating by pulling on them. And the windshield won't leave you much room, either. But if he did it, then you could too.

Then there's the issue of switching. i put the dash on a padded table and as I disconnected the old harness, I would then connect the new one as I went. That way, I didn't have to make notes as to what plug had to go where.

I suggest dismantling as much as you can. If it won't work, then pull it out.

But by pulling it out, if you are not careful, you may have a pretty badly scratched up interior.

Thanks.

Does anyone know where the external amp (not the subwoofer amp under the dash on the right side) is supposed to be located in the nav cars?

Part number for the sunload sensor that goes on the top of the defrost vent for 2012:

DG9Z 13A018 A

Update. To fix the backwards temp, 1 more wiring harness to go, it seems:

AR3Z 18B574 B

As for the sound, it looks like this would be a great time to go aftermarket.

That's all for now. I won't bother with the backwards temp for a while since it works for now anyways. I will grab the sensor as it is only $30.

OK, I lied. That's not all. Its bugging me too much to just leave it alone for now.

After pouring over the wiring diagrams, there may be a fix without changing the climate system harness. The climate harness for a non nav car is missing wires on connector 212. Connector 212 is where the dash harness plugs into the climate system harness, and it is missing pins 13, 14 and 15. These lead to the passenger temp blend door and tell it to open clockwise (pin 13) or counterclockwise (pin 14) separate from the drivers blend door. The non nav car harness just splits the wires going to the drivers to also go to the passengers blend door.

However, if you take pin 3 (yellow/orange) and pin 4 (blue/white) on connector 212, that will reverse the way the blend door opens. Pin 3 makes it go clockwise and pin 4 is counterclockwise. This is not changed with the manual climate system vs the dual zone automatic, so I am at a loss as to why it is working in reverse for us. But this should work.

Nice info! Glad it's working. But I'd like to know in your opinion is it worth it? It seems like you put a ton of hours into it.

Plus every time I remove a panel or piece no matter how careful I am I always manage to break a tab or can't get the piece back perfectly.

Removing the dash seems to be a disaster waiting to happen. I removed the whole back panel to install my rear speakers but at the end of the day it was kinda worth it. But not really ya know.

Ok, this might possibly be a really dumb question, but is it possible to replace the OEM nav unit in a 2011 with one from a 2013? I'm really frustrated that Ford hasn't issued a software update for the 2011 model in years, but the 2012+ seem to get updates regularly.

I think this was totally worth it. I spent $850 so far and will spend another $30 for the sun load sensor and $30 for the proper climate system harness. No biggy. Then I will put in an aftermarket amp. By the end of the day, I will have spent significantly less the the new 8 inch Alpine unit plus the face panel needed. I will still have Sync, I now have dual climate zone, I have the OEM look, and the screen is up high where it belongs.

All that makes it worth it to me. Now I do understand that pulling out a dash and centre console is no small thing, but it really was quite simple. As I said before, you could get away with not pulling it out and just stripping the dash down of its panels and modules to get access.

Steven, I do not know if you can swap the navs, but I don't see why not.

I was just wondering what the hardware difference is between the two honestly. I'd like to think there IS a difference since the upgrades aren't coming for the older units. This led me to consider the possibility that if the hardware is different, perhaps the connections are too.

Assuming you could do the swap easily, how would one get the upgrades? The Sync website ties upgrades to vin numbers. The website would still consider the unit in the car as the old one and wouldn't provide any of the upgrade files.
