'13-14 Cluster into '10-12 car (with TrackApps) retrofit
#782
OK, I have a cruise solution that is about as functional as can be.
The first pic (courtesy of Zero) shows the resistors as they are in a 2013/14 switch.
The second pic shows what you need to change the resistors to.
Buttons will have the following functions:
Cncl/Rsm - is now 'on'
On/Off - is now 'off'
-set - is the same
+set - is the same
The light indicators on the cluster still won't light up, but cruise will function almost as indicated on the buttons.

Good job Jim!
If anyone wants to do this mod PM me, I can assist with the soldering
(Please excuse the crude diagram and explanation. I'm typing this on a plane)
So, that does leave the problem with the cruise light. Here is what I came up with. (This is providing our 12=>13 PCM conversion doesn't work out)
On the 11/12 the cruise light is either on or off, on the 13/14 the cruise has 3 states, orange, green off. The PCM sends out a 12 Cruise Control Engaged on message every couple of ms. The 13/14 PCM does the same, but for different cruise states.
Below is a block diagram of how the new cruise setup would work. The current black box does not have the specific capability needed to capture this traffic, but it can be added. Due to this reason, I've pondered the idea on a BlackBox II, that would be made on a custom PCB with the ability to expand greatly.
Ultimately, it would have a variable resistor controlled via SPI bus. When you push ON/OFF the module would check the state of the cruise, if the cruise is off, it would turn the light orange and adjust the resistance to match that of the 12 switch, then send a pulse to the PCM. When you push Set+, it would turn the light green and just the resistance as necessary, send a pulse to the PCM, then it would go into a loop polling the PCM to see if the cruise is active. If you were to disable the cruise (via brake or other means) it would then turn the light back orange until you cut the cruise off (by pressing the off button). The whole idea is that the variable resistor can mimic any button of the 13/14 switch. The BlackBox would actually be reading in the signal of the 12 switch.
All thoughts welcome.

Let me know when you get it! This is exciting, I'm really curious how good the VCM II clone is.
@ajpturbo, do you currently have a tune? (From anyone)

Hey Zero, Yeah I just got an update for my VCMII shipment also but I think it may be longer than a week...coming from China I think....The funny think is I think it says Ford rotunda on it.
But yeah I have a tune on the car from James Gordon of tuning by james

I'm a little nervous tho. I was looking deeper into the IDS software and It looks like there are 2 licenses that you need to buy..One for the motorcraft stuff which isn't bad because you can buy a 72 hour or one month but the other is for the IDS and it's like 700 bucks...Wonder if there is anything I can do about that?

Sure I can try to help out. But I can tell from listening to you guys(Hines, Jim, Zero) I'm not as proficient with the electronics as you. I just dabble in tuning and flashing and wrenching on the car. And was ultimately trying to change my cluster to a font style that I like better with out breaking the bank lol...
Let me know what I can do...Might have to coach me along tho

I can loan you my old cluster, unless someone else is going to. Shipping would be cheaper for someone already in the US, as I'll be paying ~$35.
Just PM me the shipping details if you need mine.

AJPTurbo, if you can't get your cluster tuned, if you still have your original cluster, you could just swap the face plate. I designed the one on bottom and BCC is going to use my original one to make the pattern and build my new design. Soon, everyone can just swap the face out if they dont want all the clutter the premium GT track apps cluster has. I took a BOSS cluster and font and changed the scale to work with the GT cluster.

I sent the '13 track apps cluster face plate that I bought from Zero to Black Cat Customs. Once they finish it, they will have them available. $125 for the face plate. Looks a bit more clean than the OEM Premium. The pic is just what I sent as the design. They already have done this one for an older gauge. I am just moving the (rpm x1000) and adding the redline bar and doing a couple of small logos in the centers. It will look like this one, only on a track apps, 13 premium cluster.
Here is a pic of the one BCC did for a 11/12 cluster
This is what it will look like once installed:

Looks pretty good...I might've gone for that....Looks slightly generic tho but not bad...maybe it's just me..
The price is right tho. I've had cluster work done before and a guy that is really good and fair is a guy from a company prospeedo in California. He told me that on some of these new clusters you just can't take off the needles. You can't get them back exactly where they need to go..something about magnets and they aren't like the old stepper motors or something..I dunno
