This. The south side of town is a flat plain, literally. Everything all the way to the coast is flat. The north side of town, especially the northwest, is the southern portion of the more hilly and green areas of central Texas. It's actually quite cold there in the winter and about 5-10 degrees cooler in the Summer as well.
Re: turkey hunting, they're starting to be found a lot down in south Texas and there are seasons being opened up down there for them for the first time in a long time, might be the first time ever (I'm not a bird hunter). You can hear them just about anywhere outside of towns these days.

Not to mention the deer. Had about 15 in the yard last night. Pulled in and they all froze when the headlights hit them. Looked for a minute and went right back to eating.
****ing things are running crazy around here. I could call a flock up with my mouth, no call, and shoot one off of the porch in about 30 minutes any day of the week. Not uncommon to see 30 of them at a time strutting around in my yard. Not to mention the deer. Had about 15 in the yard last night. Pulled in and they all froze when the headlights hit them. So in Missouri as I was growing up (late 60's/70's) the hunter's fees paid for restoration of the flocks and developed a turkey season for themselves. Which were in time exported across the west - incl here in Oregon! Of course this was all before enviro whacko's who only want to lock up our national forests.
We were - and I still am - a Conservationist. We want to protect the land so as to be able to use the land - not just watch a video of protected land on Discover or NatGeo or whatever.
God bless my Dad (and Mom) and how they raised me!

The first turkey I saw in the wild was when I went muley hunting in the Apache-Sitgreaves in southeast Arizona. Climbed over a summit, there were three of them scuttling across the ridge not ten yards from me...acted like I wasn't even there. I believe they were jakes, though I don't know enough about them to tell them apart.

Thing is, I'm not a hunter. I can't kill anything unless I need it for me or my family to survive.
I see stuff like this every day in my yard, just can't kill it because I don't have to have to feed my family.

.A hen with her little ones, first time I'd seen baby turkeys, they're usually pretty reclusive. You have to look close to see them in some pics.

They're delicious. Unless you want to eat a bear like the ones that hang out in my trees, never tasted one but I'm not sure that they'd be very appetizing unless you were starving. To me at least.

Lee won't give me his address or my freezer would be full already!
Seriously tho I love turkey hunting and smoked turkey is dang amazing especially cooked over pecan wood

Amberjack under dome of hickory
Old Sage's preparation of amberjack is one of Providence Cicero's best bites of 2013.

Scallops with frog poo drizzle
Err... I mean:
Alaskan Weathervane scallops with eggplant, green curry sauce and naan puffs at Tanglewood Supreme in Magnolia.
