I haven't done anything yet. I'm just in the inquisitive stage right now checking things out. NAS is too pricey for me so i'm looking to just go external with raid capabilities.

Between wanting to move, possible knee surgery, the 50th in NC, beach vacation, i'd have waaay too much money going out than coming in. So i'm just window shopping and learning at this point.

I heard about it a while back. But from what I understand, I'd need to purchase some serious, and single-purpose, hardware to even have a chance at mining.

I had heard about it quite some time ago, and then looked into it a bit about a month ago. Then someone was talking about it at work today and the bitcoin value is close to $1000 right now.

I did some research and Bitcoin is at the point where you need a dedicated box that just does the math. The more you pay the faster they are. There was one for under $400 but they all seem to be hard to find anywhere. CPU/GPU processing just doesn't cut it any more.

Then there is Litecoin. That you can still mine through CPU/GPU. One Litecoin is valued about $25 so a big difference in price.

It took some reading but I set myself up with Litecoin. Since i'm using the Intel video in the motherboard, I went with CPU mining. I've got it working and i'm making money but it's a joke. At this speed i'll make about .01 to .02 Litecoins a day. That won't add up to much. A good $500 ATI GPU could make 10 times that amount.

I attempted a setup on the media center PC too. Same motherboard, but it kept crashing over there.

I'll just keep letting it run on this machine for a while and see what happens.

It maxes out your cpu though, correct? So you may not even be making enough to pay for the power to run your machine. You'll just be stressing your machine all day for next to nothing.

Yeah, power consumption and cost of equipment needs to be considered. That's talked about. It's one thing if you have a fast capable video card already. If you buy one, how long to recoup the costs. There are charts to help figure it out.

You can control the cores used and I think how much processing power so you can run it slow. It's going now and I have no slowdown in the foreground. My CPU is way more than I need, so this will give it a good workout.

This. I've been following bitcoin for a while, but didn't know you could "mine" it??

"Solving algorithms". Which becomes increasingly difficult as more bitcoin are mined. It's already well past the point of any regular pc being able to solve anything.

I don't know much about litecoin. It sounds very similar, but it may be different.

Just to note: it's not actually solving anything useful. Best I can tell, it's just a way to distribute the "currency".

He's probably already the one hoarding all the bitcoin, driving up the difficulty for everyone else.

I've looked into it

It's very intriguing and interesting

But I'm not a computer geek

I did notice that there's ways to go into it more or less as a group or pool
