Ignition key cylinders have only one set of tumblers. The keys are double cut so you can insert them using either side without having to stick them in one way. You can if you want to have a single key with two different cuts and it will operate the lock cylinders just fine. My only concern is the coded transponder embeded in the key working on two different cars.

from what Ive read, the key just sends a certain number out- not a new number each time its used type of thing, but just one very long number sequence that must be already 'taught' to the car...So reteaching the same key to both cars should work...or so I think

Ignition cylinders actually have tublers on both sides.

Why do some keys have a 2x on the trunk button, while others don't?

Key w/the 2x:

Key w/o the 2x:

Thanks

Some keys require that you press the button twice to release the trunklid while others require that you hold the button down long enough to activate the release. This is a feature that prevents you from accidentally popping the trunk open when you don't want it to, say for instance you have you pockets full and the button inadvertantly presses against something.

I'm guessing he gets his info from Ford since he is a tech at the dealer here in town. He is the guy that put my headers and x-pipe on for me and he seemed like he knew what he was doing. Oh yeah, he took my Fusion/Milan key to work and cut it and programmed it for me too.

Hate to bring a post from the dead, but yesterday my Fusion key broke! The metal key separated form the plastic. It seems they used some kind of rubbery glue, just replaced that with some 2 ton epoxy and it seems good again, just keep an eye out for this.

Does Mazda use the same tech in their keys as Ford? I think it would be nice if we could use a Mazda key fob with the folding blade

No idea, but I'd think it would be different.

Mine came to me thay way in the mail. After looking close,it looks like he is getting near new keys, and replacing the metal key part. There is a hole in the key that allows a plastic pin to hold the metal to the plastic parts. Mine had alot of that glue also. It also had a nick in the plastic, nothing a little sand paper couldn't fix.

Same thing happened here. Same solution too. No problems since the fix. Everyone should look out for that.

The key I bought was brand new in a sealed Ford plastic bag. Doesn't look like it was previously used or modified in any way. Sorry to hear you guys had problems, hopefully mine aren't going to break.

^^Who was your seller?

My metal piece broke loose after about two days, no big deal, epoxy easily fixed that. But it also came with a big (almost takes up a whole side) scuff on the plastic which I'm not sure how to get rid of. Kind of irritating that he'd sell it like that and not even mention it.

Can someone tell me where the best place to buy this key from would be? Also, where would I go to get it cut? I guess it's a pretty simple program method?

Most bought there key from ebay, and I had mine cut at menards, I also hear Ace but Home Depot wouldn't do it for me since it has a 'chip' in it.
