I whole heartedly agree with banko protection. It is absolutely necessary. Maybe I should have made that clear before. It is part of the system, both 7 and 11, but this was not run like any other typical bankruptcy. That's all I'm really complaining about. They needed chapter 11 to clear themselves from the burdens of the pensions and healthcare demands they themselves accepted in their union contracts. But the government stepped in on this one and used our dollars to shore this company up all the while taking a chunk of the company and giving it to the unions. If GM was truly worth saving or if it was even remotely economically viable someone would have stepped in and bought up the assets and restarted GM clear of the debt. Or the pieces would have been sold off to recoup the losses. We have no idea what would have happened now, but if the government had not stepped in, it does not necessarily mean that these workers would have lost their jobs.
And the national security argument was a flier to appease the right or at least reduce the howls and screaming, you and I both know that the ONLY reason GM was too big to fail and needed the government bailout was the unions. Everything the democratic party does, it does for unions. They are on in the same. The DP is the leadership, and the unions are the army. Without their army they don't stand a chance.

And at the time when everything is falling from the sky with no catcher's mitt, no one was buyin' nothin' in freefall regardless of assets or opportunity. There were no buyers.
It was a fear induced implosion starting with the media in early 07 IMO. A slowdown is one thing, but they kept harping about 'heading to recession' to try and ruin Bush for one last shot. I'm in the market everyday and sometimes listen to the financial jibberish in the background. Look up Aug 2007 when the market first broke and the Fed stepped in pre-opening in an emergency move. Wow. Thousands incl me were set up for short sales based on the after close reports the previous day, and then the Fed intervened that morning before we could unwind. Kissed 5k. The Amex was delayed for several hours because there were so many trades pending pre-open and then scrambling to cancel post-open. Friggin' CNBC doesn't talk about that do they??
That was the beginning, and then the fear based reporting kept fueling the downslide. Then $4 gas. But as shaky as some mortgages were, for the most part they were paying, people had jobs, and the lenders had accounted for normal loss reserves anyway. There was no grounds for an implosion. Yet (according to the gov) the recession started Dec 2007.
Regardless, solid companies like Thornburg and American Home Mortgage (who had high quality portfolio's) got caught in the downdraft. Kissed another 5k. That's where Bush's SEC was lame in allowing naked short sales (they removed the uptick rule) whereby UNFOUNDED RUMORS could take a company out! Effing media exagerrating finally became reality and here we are. (And yes, I deducted both losses and still have a bunch of carry forward.) Then the domino's spread worldwide and no one trusted our anything. Then came Lehman... and the domino's all went... and here we are. For no sound reason. All could have been avoided.
The national security argument is entirely my own reasoning. I have not read anything about it. Lotta tanks, jeeps, artillary came out of the big three friend.
I just think there are (rare) times the government has a role to its citizens to intervene for the good of the Country. Isn't that partly why we are paying taxes? However, that is way different than an opportunist changing the foundation of the free enterprise system into outright socialism.
I'm a supply sider first and foremost.

I remember the August '07 suspension in trading. I've never heard it tied into the timeline of the '08 melt down but that makes sense now.
And I do remember some trying to sell the national security need for the bailout of GM. It was especially the case when they thought they would have to save all 3.

I just thought some of the younger members here might learn a little something, but I guess it's up to us elders to keep the country going.

Congrats David!
I want mine back on the road.
Was a bit busy these past few days, but I managed to dump out the rain damaged kitchen cabinets I had on the back yard. Tons of rotten wood with a colony of garden snails living there I broke the cabinets down to pieces, piled the big parts up besides the trash cans, and the doors & remaining drawers were put in the back of my trusty pick up truck (the Protege) to dump them @ my workplace's dumpster. What was left of the tarp tent was removed since the roof part was broken anyway, and what remains of the walls was stored for the moment. The waste disposal truck came today and everything's gone. Now the only thing left to do is cut the grass and remove the frigging tangling vines that plague the fence and part of the floor, a PITA for sure. Oh well, it'll be worth it once I put the Mustang there for the engine removal process

Yeah you were busy.
Me too. Scrambling with last minute outdoor winter prep. I've got today and tomorrow and that'll be the end of sunny skies and Indian Summer Part II. 70 today! (near record) Then winter will be setting in for good. Almost always have perma snow on the ground by Thanksgiving. So I've been hustlin'!

I will buy Jack Stands!!!
I guess we'll have to take it to PM's then. Because the open politic forum is subject to all kinds of posters I really don't care to hear from in an intelligent discussion anymore.
I just thought some of the younger members here might learn a little something, but I guess it's up to us elders to keep the country going.

Gotta love them Wolverines! I guess that means you never noticed the front plate on my truck. I'll post a current pic of it, and then the pic I took 2 days before I bought it
Before:
After (plus more flex )
Please tell me you can see all 4 pics. And internet cookie to the person who can find the 5(or 6, depending on how you classify one thing) changes in the truck from the cab forward, exterior only
