This is really bad. I haven't seen so much rain for some years now. I hope this doesn't keep up
That's insane! What's causing all the rain?

I know what you meant. And you know what I meant. So why are we having this conversation?

Behold my $8 dollar garage sale find

Front speaker:

Rear speakers:

They're from a surround sound system, sound pretty good too. All I gotta do now is get a little more speaker wire so I can run some from the driver side rear speaker. It's only hooked into the signal from the passenger side right now.

Sweet!

I used to have those exact speakers back in 1997. I got them at Best Buy for like $99. I add the center and two bookshelf surrounds to add to my Yamaha floor speakers for my first 5.1 surround setup. That was Dolby Surround (analog). Dolby Digital didn't even exist yet.

Haha, sweet Sean!

Gary, just out of curiosity, how did the old 5.1 systems work? Did what you'd now hear out of the center channel come out of all the channels?

No it worked pretty much the same as now. The Receiver though decoded the Dolby signal from the Video tape. So it went in from the VCR in just a stereo RCA and the receiver unit decoded it into one type of Dolby 5.1 and then the receiver sent the signal to the 5 speakers. A subwoofer could be used but I didn't use one because my Yamaha floor speakers had a 12" woofer in each. They were 3 way. tweeter/mid/woofer. Typical 1970's-1990's stereo speaker.

The sound out of the rears was very diffused. Not clear at all. The front left and right speaker still had a lot of voices in them, because typical center channels were very small and couldn't handle the full load. In essence for me the old analog 5 channel was much more distorted and couldn't be listened to nearly as loudly as the current digital setup. Now I can crank it louder and everything is far clearer.

Plus there's dozens of sound fields and decoders. DTS, THX, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, DTS-ES, and many, many more depending on the receiver and the format.

Ok, thanks. I've been wondering lately how it used to work. Makes a lot more sense now.

That's the second set I bought saturday. The first set was too big so it went back. There were full size pioneer stereo speakers. They were too thick for behind the seat lol.

So, after maybe 12 years of depreciation, and a garage clearance sale, those are now worth $92 less to me

Maybe I'll try and make my front channel hook into the big speaker, and rears to the rear... Hmm sounds like a wednesday thing to tackle

hey guys, same here!

The GT is doing very well...actually just had some interior work done, including the carpet and headliner (which had the running pony embroidered in it)....it looks much better in person!

I am officially done with my interior now sine I had the new re-done in the summer, along with replacing alot of dash parts, door panels, etc.

Hey Cliff. I think Jill asked me last week where's Cliff been?

How's the GT doing?

The problem you are going to have is that those speakers are 8ohm speakers. That was typical home speaker setup. You'll need to wire the back ones with your door speakers and you should get about a 6ohm load. But that means you amp or the amp in your head unit won't be putting out the same power it was. It'll be reduced. If you run the 8ohm speakers by themselves you'll only be getting about 1/2 the power you should. But for $8 its something.

That was the cheapest 3 channel surround kit you could buy at the time. Best Buy Christmas door buster special too I think.
