Not all of them. The MPG was a special model of the Mustang II, focused on fuel economy. Also goverment mileage ratings back then tended to be hopelessly optimistic, and cars in the real world rarely reached them.
I still remember the day in '74 when my older cousin called to say he'd just bought a new Mustang (I was around 12-13 at the time), so my brother and I run outside all excited and he and he rolls up in a II. What a letdown... I just don't consider those things true Mustangs to this day It did catapult my other cousin who owned a Maverick Grabber with a 302 into the lead as my favorite cousin. It wasn't a Mustang, but at least if he the gas pedal, you didn't start looking at your watch waiting for something to happen.
I always like the statistic that in the first month of release Ford sold 18,000 Mustang II's. In '64, selling REAL Mustangs, they sold 22,000 the first DAY...

Yep not to mention that people actually drive a lot less than they used to, choosing other forms of transportation, telecommuting, etc. All of it adds up to fewer car sales.

While its certainly not my favorite Mustang time period it was still a Mustang. Although I do think GM did a better job keeping their pony cars somewhat performance minded. Like a previous poster said, without the II there wouldn't be 50 years.

The Mustang II was just as much Mustang as the original. Long hood, short deck etc. It was what was needed at the time - oil embargo, etc. Some complain it was based on the Pinto but the original was based on the Falcon. I think the SN95 was the first Mustang specific chassis.

I think although it was HEAVILY modified, the SN95 still had some Fox chassis under it. Albeit you would Sherlock Holmes to find it.

Very true. I think the IIs get a bad rap but they were much batter mustangs that the 71 - 73 Aircraft carriers. I have also heard some say the II was base on a LTD chassis and it was well over 3K lbs. That simple is not true they were much closer to 2700. lbs.

We had 2 M2 ghias in our family. Both were 4-cyl. One had power steering & brakes; the other didn't. That car stayed in our family for 20 years before it got totaled with over 300k on it.
The car averaged around 30mpg. I know because my dad kept a book with every service record including every drop gas out into the car & the mileage @ each fill up.
