Bingo! I think you've hit the nail right on the head. The Bullitt was never intended to be a Boss/Mach 1 surrogate and I'm not sure why people ever thought it would be. Ford certainly never suggested that. I would guess that the folks who somehow misguided themselves in thinking it would be a high HP beast and jumping into the artificial hype are a sizable segment among those who are disappointed.

That's exactly what has made some people upset with the new Bullitt. We created the hype, not Ford, as they were very quiet during the whole process. We set ourselves up for the disappointment. The only thing I ever remember that Ford said about the Bullitt early on was: "Bullitt will not disappoint and will reach 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds".This should've given us the hint that it wouldn't be powered by an engine in the 400HP range.

im sure it will stir things up, but if you would put "shelby" on the bullitt and call it a "shelby bullitt" you would have thousands line up for it....but it would still be a mustang. your just paying for the name. seems that i have just as much fun in my $30k GT as i would in a Shelby. i can only go so fast on the highway. bullitt looks nice. be interested to see some picts of all the bullitts when the 2008 comes out who has all three in their garage!!!

Although the Shelby GT is a nice car, it's a disappointment IMO. When people think "Shelby", they think big H.P. & Performance. The Shelby GT lacks the H.P.!
Then when you see these dealers mark them up to $41k, it makes you want to puke even more!
As long as the dealerships don't mark-up the Bullitt, it will certainly be a better deal, IMO.
Now, when the Mach1 or Boss is made, it better live up to expectations.

I think that when Ford finally releases the Mach1/Boss, most will be quite pleased with their offerings. They'll probably be quite the barn-burners. But for now, the Bullitt is what we get and that's just the lead up for what's to come. I think the new Bullitt will be a great all around balanced performer at a great price. I doubt if you'll see value like that in the upcoming SE's.

Hollywood- are you happy with your GT?
It sure doesn't seem like it.
Why don't you go buy a new challenger or camaro? Go grace those message boards for a while.
I bet you probably already do. And I bet your on there slamming those cars too.

Ok, pardon the interruption but I can answer this for Hollywood until he gets back. He seems to be very happy with his GT, I've seen him praise it before myself, but I believe he is simply making the point that with all of the competition upping the ante, this is sort of lackluster performance for Ford.
I myself am a huge blue oval fan and always will be, but lately a lot of the SE's Mustangs have simply fallen short IMO and a lot of us Ford fans just seem to say "Oh, okay. I'll take it anyway." The fact is we want more. These aren't just cars to us, they're a way of life!
By the way, that was sarcasm he was using

What competition? Honestly- what competition is Ford Mustang facing?
Dodge Charger? no.
Camaro? It's still 1 1/2 years away from release.
Challenger? Perhaps. But Ford has the GT500, and GT500KR to gun down that car. And the challenger will be almost impossible to get and the ADM are going to be huge.
I really don't understand why people don't "get" the Bullitt. It's a limited production car- 7700. How could that limited number of cars be competition for any other car?
So it was never intended to be a car that was going to go into battle against Dodge and Chevy.

Honestly, ford is going through a restructure. Why spend the r&d money with no competition. These cars hit a niche market and have lots of happy owners. Ford has something for the challenger/maro Trust me.

But as you showed in your statement, the competition is coming very soon. Ford can't stand by and produce a car that people "might" buy. They need to build a mid range Mustang that will have muscle car people going nuts and snatching them up.
Truth be told, if I weren't such a Ford fan, I would wait until the Challenger or Camaro were built.
I just think this is overall disappointing. I wanted to see Ford roll something comparative to what the Mach 1 was to the SN95 platform.
It has potential, but it just wasn't executed as well as it could have been.

They should've just gave us the color, provided an optional cosmetic "BULLITT" badge package and offered it cheaper than the GT/CS.
As far as the alleged future BOSS and MACH I cars go, if they don't build one of those the way I want or let me put the options on it I want then I aint buying one of those neither.

This is absolutely correct. The 2008 BULLITT is NOT a mid-range Mustang. A lot of the parts on there should be offered on the base GT as part of a true GT package anyway.

My sentiments exactly! The new Bullitt just wasn't worth the wait in my opinion.
That and they are building an awful lot more than the 01's. Over 2,000 more at this point.
It would be nice if Ford just offered the color, though I would love to see True Blue again too.
