Recently I had seen a video on u-tube and read an article of a 2011 v6 stang have its driveshaft blown up when hitting speeds of around 135 mph. There has been debate on the actual cause of this driveshaft to fail as such. Based upon the 135 mph the owner must of had the vehicle tuned therefore the speed governor was removed.

What was the real reason this driveshaft failed. I hear some claim the driveshaft failed because Ford uses a much weaker driveshaft that is not capable of traveling such speeds which is why Ford placed a speed governor on the v6 models.

Others claim this is bull$hit and Ford does not use a weaker driveshaft in its v6 models. Some claim the 11 v6 driveshaft can easily handle 135 plus and that incident was a rare, freak incident with other underlying factors. Factors that had nothing to do with a weaker driveshaft. If the driveshaft can withhold safe speeds of 135 plus then why did Ford place a speed governor on a car they gave 305 hp?

Can anyone give it to me straight?

Nope, nobody has the straight answer yet.

The video you saw was a copy of the original that the car owner took off youtube.

It did not have a full tune, just removal of the speed limit function by way of the tuner.

The V6 cars definitely do have a lesser driveshaft than the GT. GT's use a shaft with a carrier support bearing in the center, basically the GT has two short shafts allowing a higher speed. The V6 has no center support, just a sliding spline in the center.

I believe this makes for much more shaft flex and a much lower critical speed.

The Driveshaft Shop is working on a very strong CV style shaft using an aluminum tube but it's not out yet and when it is will be pretty pricey.

Well I appreciate your insight on this. If in fact the v6 driveshafts are weaker and not able to withstand speeds such as 135, then shame on Ford for not warning customers this. Shame of Ford for indicating and advertising to me my 2011 v6 stang is capable of going 160. My 2011 stang came with a stock factor speed odometer that reads 160. When I looked at the car, test drove it the speed odometer read 160. Ford is advertising this vehicle and giving off the impression this 305 hp vehicle is capable of going 160 mph. This is not the case and there speed odometer should not advertise such. It gives people a false sense of what the car is not really capable of doing.

One reason consumers buy a sports car is to drive fast especially if you got a stang. Ford really needs to change on how there marketing and advertising this car.

ok wow..

the 95 mitsu eclipse also has a 160 speedo.. doesnt mean it goes 160..

they put a speed limiter on the car to keep people safe (even from lack of knowledge).

the V6 mustang is a very nice car. It is a very nice daily driver in wolfs clothing.

You're actually trying to say Ford is falsely advertising the Mustang because it includes a 160MPH speedometer that they never mention in any of their advertising?

Wow, I mean, just wow.

No where does Ford advertise or claim the V6 Mustang can do 160. The top speed listed on the speedometer is not an advertisement, nor an indication of what the car could do. I take it you're a kid, otherwise you would remember that in the 1980s virtually ever car built had a speedometer that was maxed out at 85.

Im just saying that the printed speed odometer is a form of advertisement and it doesn't represent a factual maximum speed of what the car can do. I think its a cheap marketing and advertising trick that Ford uses to get people thinking the car is more capable of what it actually is. Its a form of advertising and it just gives false impressions about the vehicle.
If my 2011 stang can only go 115 safely then just have a stock speed odometer that reads 115. I had a 1993 v6 Camaro and that too had a speed governor on it. The top speed was around 115 and so the speed odometer read 115. One never got the impression the v6 could go 140. The Z28 had a speed odometer of 160 or so.

I love my 2011 stang, however im glad I read the mustang forums. If not I would of never known about the speed governor and never known my 305 hp sports car couldn't safely travel faster than my soccer mom Mazda mini van

Im saying if the driveshafts are not capable of handling such speeds then perhaps Ford should not market and advertise different. Buy Ford giving a vehicle a stock factory speed odometer that reads a certain speed they are indicating and marketing such a car will do that maximum speed. I was just wondering what the real reason for the driveshaft failure was and if it was speed related of the weaker driveshaft, Ford should warn customers of such and change how they advertise in certain things

they do not need to warm anyone since they limit the speed and make the car unable to go past said set speed.

I am sure these people are not lying.. its think kind of thinking that makes the car work and fun things in gerneral get messed up and taken away...

Honestly. And not to be rude. You are coming across to me as the spoiled kid in high school who's parents just bought him a new mustang v6 and you now think you are the ****!

Clearly your one of those car guys. Not a fan of the sixer. Not a real sports car because of the v6. Only the V8 will do. I understand, that's cool. Had no idea that the fusion came with a 3.7 305 hp engine. Sweet. The fusion must rock. I most certainly do think the 11 plus stangs are sports cars. The old v6's were a different story but this new bread is all different. When a car hits the 0-60 mark in around 5.5 seconds and does the 1/4 mile 14 flat stock then yeah, I consider that sports car like. I do love my 11 stang. Its sheer awesome, just got to remember not to go 135 .

I do love that number. Its a sweet ride. I can see where the frustration of fellow stang owners would be bothered about the new 2011 plus v6. The owners of older Gt models whose cars used to be the big kid on the block with its 280,290, 300 hp. Here comes the v6 that's just as fast, 7 grand cheaper, way better fuel mileage, lower car insurance. I know for many GT stang owners the v6 are not real sports cars. There the sports car wanna be.

1- my old 1997 cobra that I bought for 4800 bucks can beat your "305" HP sports car.. so no jealousy here.
2- the gt your year has over 100 more horses than you.
3- the gt500 your year has over 200 more horses than you.

Your car is a base model. Stop acting like it is the god of all cars! Your coming across as annoying...

The 2011Gt rocks a$$. 412 hp. Killer. It's a freaking beast compared to the v6. As far as the 97 Cobra. Is it stock? Im not familiar with the weight of the 97 Cobra. Assuming its stock, your 305, 1997 cobra against a stock 2011v6 stang, ill take the 11 stang will take ya. Assuming your cobra is stock. Knowing how Cobra owners are, doubt its stock. Either way it would be close.
