MTAS....open the pdf on the first page of this. It is in the first or second post. Once you have that, open it to page two and everything is laid out on how to do it. 2005 is Job 1 when it comes to the radio head.

MTAS: Did you ever get your new steering wheel installed yet? Were you going to add the steering wheel controls for whatever radio your have, except factory original? Just wondering where you stood, and if you needed anyother help. Akdoggie

No but thanks for following up! I had to buy a chainsaw which cut in to my steering wheel mod funds I'll chime in here when the time comes believe me. I will be using the existing Shaker500 HU but from what I've read here that unit won't work with any steering wheel controls. The best I can hope for is the cruise to work.

This is just a crazy thought but how difficult would it be to install Sync 3 into our cars?

You read where I chose to go to an Android 4.2.2 radio, without CD/DVD player. I've gone totally digital. I have over 500GB of storage attached to the standard 8GB the head comes with, so I have a full music library, a number of movies and video, as well as numerous pictures stored, so if I need to show someone something, I can make sure I have it on disc to view. Very kewl idea, in my opinion. I also put one of these Android heads in my 98 F150, and pulled the Escape navigation head. That took some modification, but the results were staggering.

I don't think it will work with our antiquated systems. lol. These newer units, along with SYNC 3, are much much quicker, which makes working the two together almost impossible. It would have compatibility problems, but what I've read about it, it's not going to be a workable option. Think of the difference like USB 1.1 to today's newer 3.0.
Is it a power issue or a plug compatibility issue? Or would the signals from the 2010 steering wheel different from the newer ones? What if I used a 2015 wheel?

Maybe Im not getting my head around this but WHY wouldnt it work? What is stopping from installing a whole new system in the car itself?

I was reading a memo from GM that included information on Ford and FCA, about making things non usable from vehicle to vehicle. They didn't want to lose out of sales of accessory parts, so they were developing a way to make certain particular parts work specific to what they were made for. It must go to the Congressional Bill that talks about aftermarket parts. I hope that this isn't the case, as it's taken a while to figure out what we have now. lol. I see this as a real problem down the road for newer cars and trucks. Hell, the black box in the 2013's and up is a real problem also. It's a Tattle tale for the brands warranty to approve or disapprove claims. Nothing more.

Redundant according to Fords site for the Fusion. Taurus and Edge. I'm guessing the Mustang is also. I don't see why you can't use the Boss steering wheel and the correct switches to make it work. Good luck John.

A gentleman sent me an email the other day and when answering it, actually deleted it instead of sending it.
Would the sender please email me again and I will gladly answer your questions. I got a little delete happy and yours went pfft. Gone.

Hi everybody,
I've read thru alot of this thread, but not all, and I have a couple of questions about using a 2010+ steering wheel in my 2008 GT/CS for the audio controls.
I had steering wheel controls in my Fusion, and I find I miss them dearly.
What I have already:
I have the steering wheel from a '14 Mustang. On the way to me are the two WPT1242 connectors and the Motorcraft SW6712 cruise switch for the left side. (If I had found this thread sooner, I wouldn't be needing the switch, as I would have bought a different wheel). Oh well.
My head unit is an aftermarket Pioneer NEX4100, with Android Auto, so I don't need onboard navigation; I can use Google maps from my phone and it displays on the screen. Voice activated call and text, so I don't need/have SYNC.
I have an ASWC-1 steering wheel control interface that I used on my Fusion, but obviously didn't need on the Mustang when I put the Pioneer head unit in.
My main question is, can I use the ASWC-1 instead of running the wires to the back of the J1 and J3 plugs? Wouldn't there be some way to utilize the ASWC-1? Not sure how I installed it in the Fusion, I'll have to dig the paperwork up again. Hope I can find it.
And if I do have to tap into the J1 & J3 plugs, where do you get those tiny pins that go thru to the inside of the plug?
I'm sure I have other questions, but these are the ones burning for now.
Thanks!

Ok, after reading over this whole thread multiple times, along with akdoggies excellent write up PDF and help, and with some trial and error, I was able to get the cruise controls working with the new 2014 steering wheel.
One thing to note.....that if you're using a 2014 wheel, the wiring is a bit different on the cruise control side. There are two extra wires, a red/white and a blue white on that side. Substitute the red/white wire for the brown one that hooks up to the 5 pin connector at the 12 o'clock position and it works perfect. That was alluded to in one of the latter pages in this thread but I wanted to clarify that for anyone else.
I'm still working on the audio controls. I ran the 2nd WPT-1242 connector, (carefully labeled and matching the 1st WPT-1242 connections), from the clockspring to the headunit area so I won't have to remove the steering wheel again to finish up.
I've pinned the back of the J1 connectors #16, #17 #18 and #19.
Haven't been able to get anything to work yet on the audio side through a variety of wire combinations.
I haven't gone through all the possible combinations yet....ran out of time.
Yet one reason may be that the Metra harness/plug I bought for the car when I installed the Pioneer headunit doesn't have corresponding pins for the #16 and #17 slots, so my guess is that hooking anything up to those two won't do anything. When I discovered that, I kinda figured I need more info.
I know the headunit is SWC compatible, as I had it in my Fusion before I sold the car and it worked fine in there.
Any help from here out would be greatly appreciated!

Working!
Ok...so after having to put this project aside for a few months (life, and other life things getting in the way), I was finally able to get around to trying to finish this mod.
The big thing that triggered me into getting back to this (besides it bugging the crap outta me, with only half the buttons working), was I stumbled upon another 2014 Mustang steering wheel in RED leather. I've only ever seen one other one in red, so I jumped on it.
Anyways, I already had the cruise control side working, but was having no luck with the audio side. There are 4 wires coming from the audio side: a Blue, a Yellow, a Purple, and a Green wire.
After trying several combinations of these wires into the #16,17 18 and 19 pins on the back of the J1 plug to no avail, I decided to try something different.
I had a Metra Axxess ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control unit laying around from an install in my old Ford Fusion that I pulled when I sold that vehicle last year.
Note this is NOT the PAC unit that some others have used for this mod.
This is the one I used:
The online instructions for the Axxess are pretty much the same for most Fords; the white/green wire from the Axxess is the key. More on that wire in a bit.
From their instructions:
I also got a clue from a different Mustang forum a couple of months ago...don't remember which one, that had:
I taped and capped off the blue and yellow wires from the steering wheel.
All the audio controls work perfect! Volume up/down, next/previous track, and switching between audio sources work fine!
The phone button and the voice button on the wheel don't function, but I didn't expect/need them to, especially without knowing where the Blue and Yellow wires from the wheel should go to. I don't have SYNC, but the Pioneer unit works just about like SYNC does. I have a microphone button on the head unit that does all the voice activated functions, so I kinda doubt both steering wheel buttons would work...maybe the voice button, since it's only one button on the head unit...
I was happy enough with what I have working to close it up and be done with it.
Maybe the Blue and Yellow wires from the wheel go to pins #16 and #17....to maybe get the voice activation steering wheel button to work?? No big deal to me right now.
There was some confusion (likely on my part) in parts of this thread over which wires from the wheel were positive and negative...this tells me the purple is positive+, and the green is negative-.
Extra Special thanks to akdoggie, without whose help and the write up in the beginning of this thread....I would have never been able to start or finish this. Thanks man!!

akdoggie, I'm trying to get the audio controls to work on my 2008 GT with a Raxiom Navigation HU. I was wondering what the wiring looks like, and do I need a module to get it work?

08 steering wheel controls with Raxiom head unit
I have attempting to hook up steering wheel audio controls to my 2008 GT using a steering wheel from a 2014 Trac Pac. I currently have a Raxiom OEM-style Nav unit in my car. I pulled out the MP3 base HU that came with the car to put in the Raxiom. How do I get the cruise and audio controls to work with my setup?

Hi I'm trying to do the same thing can you tell me what wire from the PAC you connected to the WPT 1442 on the botton of the clock spring? I have the purple wire from the new harness going into my first WPT1442 inside the clock spring. I'm just trying to get he radio controls to work not to conncerned with the phone. I'm using an aftermarket head unit Pioneer AVH-W6500NEX and a PAC SWI-CP2

Did you read the pdf? I'll try to help you out if I can remember what I did.
Also do you have the proper button control? There are 2 versions.

Hi and thnk you for replying. Yes I read the PDF but it seem to me that it is telling you how to hook up the steering wheel wirres to a stock head unit. I as I said am using a pioneer AVH-W6500nex and I'm using a PAC swi-CP2 steering wheel control. IF you can help me figure this out I'd be most greatful.
