Thanks for your input. I was leaning towards #1 myself.
Now to see if I can get this made.

I am finished with retrofitting the LCD cluster into my 2012. It all works as it should!
I have just picked up another 2013 LCD to try in my 2005. Should be here in a couple of weeks.
Here are some hurdles:
The PCM definitely has info for air/fuel ratio, intake air temp, cylinder head temp and the others, as I can see the info on my VCMII. So it is there. Redliners Performance can make a module that will take that data and interpret it into something the cluster understands.
A 2013 wheel will be needed for this - or specifically the 5 button message center switch. While wiring the message center is no biggy, teh cruise is another matter as the resistances are different. There is a solution to that as well, but it involves changing the resistors on the circuit board of the switch. But the cruise light on the cluster will not illuminate when activated as it should, but cruise will work.
If using a 2013 wheel, then the right side buttons will not be used. They are for Sync and phone as well as tuning and volume. To get this to work, you will need to see akdoggie's thread on retrofitting sync into your car.
Track apps will not work. Nothing to be done about it - almost. There might be a solution to this.
Physically, it should fit, but I won't know until this weekend.

As an update, another member has retrofitted the LCD cluster to his 2010 car. He got everything working except for the AFR guage and the accelerometer (track Apps) using the black box from Redliners Performance.
This is good news for 05 - 09 guys. Means we can get the LCD guages to work.

Another option is to load the as built data of a 2011 or 2012 car into the cluster, and track apps and the extra guages will then be removed from the menu. You then won't have non-functional items pop up in the menu.
I think 2011 cars don't have the adjustable steering feel either? So that would be gone too.

The problem with the 2011 as build is the oil change message. That will only disappear with the 2010 as build

The C220 connectors for the 05 cluster is not the same as the C220 for the 2013/14.
I will need to cut off the connector plugging into the old cluster and replace it with one off of a 2010-14 car.
The pinouts are different, so they will have to be switched around.
2014 C220
1 - fuse 26 or circuit breaker

Download the 2010 as build. No steering wheel menu, no gauges, no TrackApps. The only thing that shows when selecting gauges is the pony ...the second screen with the details is gone.

The cluster does physically fit. No modifications required except 1:
The clear plastic cover (goes over the guages) from the 2005 cluster needs to replace the clear plastic cover on the 2013 cluster. Now the tabs are in different places, so the tabs will have to be cut off the clear plastic cover from the 2005 and then glued are fastened somehow onto the 2013 cluster. No problem.
Pics later.

No pics yet, sorry. Took pics with bother's phone but he hasn't forwarded them to me yet.
So far we have this for the pinouts on C220:
2005 - 2013
2 goes to 8
3 goes to 1 & 3
4 goes to direct to 5 way switch
6 direct to 5 way switch
14 goes to 25
15 goes to 26
17 goes to 12
18 goes to 13
Not sure about the others yet. Will test this and see what works in a couple of weeks when the new cluster comes in.

Here is what we see we need.
1. A new Black Box from Redliners Performance (version 2 is in the works)
2. 2005 cluster for testing
3. Junker fuel level sender or we can use the one on your car, and record the voltage as certain fuel levels.
4. A method of disabling PATS (SCT Tuner is best)
We will need to figure out things like:
1. What data the SJB sends the cluster in regards to Fuel Level
2. SJB -> IPC Parking Brake
3. SJB -> Oil Pressure
Sean Reilly mentioned that some guys put the copperhead PCM into the 05-09 cars. Would that screw everything up, or could we do that and flash it to 2013 and tune the PCM to a 4.6 engine?
I cannot find any information on the copperhead swap. Looking at the body harness C175B the pinout is different. It would take a significant amount of work to get the wiring right. However, if it was accomplished. Tuning would be doable. Then you have to think about ABS module => PCM communication, same with others BCM, RCM, etc.
We have 5 analog inputs on the new BB. We could use for the following
1. Fuel Level
2. Oil Switch
3. Cruise Control Switch
4 OUTPU: Cruise Control to PCM
For the message center switch, we would have to get the 13/14 wheel and put that in. Cruise will be an issue. Resistances in the cruise is not the same for 2013/14.
For the 2013 Cluster, I did some more digging.
C220
1 - Is hot at all times
3 - Is switched in run or start
5 - Is the oil pressure switch. Apparently on the 05, the information is coming from the SJB, as the oil pressure switch goes to there.
22 & 23 are PATS. Need not worry about that, we can turn it of in the 05 PCM.
10&9 - Is for the Compass input. Will not be need, we may simulate it.
7 - Is for the TCS switch, the 05 has this switch, and should work in the same matter.
18 & 19 - We will have to let the black box take care of this, and that is going to take a good bit of work. As the Fuel level on the 05 is sent to the SJB, and then is relayed to the cluster.
8 - GND

OK,
Here is what has been done so far:
I took the cluster connector from the 2013 and then matched up the wires to the 2005 cluster as I oultined in the post above.
I started up the car to see what would happen and here are the results:
Cluster powers up and starts with the running pony logo as it should. The the following errors appear on the screen (all errors so far are expected).
check fuel inlet
tire pressure fault
TCS fault
On the idiot lights I get the check engine, brake on, TCS off, oil.
Also, the fuel guage does not work (2013 sends fuel signals differently, so I expected this)
Speedo and tach work, as does oil temp guage and on the digital guages, voltmeter also works.
When I shut the car off, the analog guages stay in the position they were in just before the car is shut off. Power to the cluster stays on despite having removed the key.
The car can be started with the 2013 cluster.

I also test fitted a 2012 cluster (before I had the 2013) to see if it fits. No problem there. There is no difference physically between the 2012 and 2013 clusters.

As you can see in the pictures, to make the 2013 cluster physically fit, you need to remove the clear plastic cover and replace it with one from the 2005.
Unfortunately, they are not interchangable, so you will have to snap the tabs off and glue it onto the 2013 cluster - or use 2 sided tape.
