Hey Stangnut, How much higher than stock is the chrome bar + the white hurst ball??? I like the fact that stock sits low, but is it a lot higher? It sure looks like that... let me know...

Yes. It's a lot higher. Personally that's the one thing I'd change about it. According to one of the magazines that installed one, it's 1-1/2" taller.
However, I prefer the chrome stick and especially the small ball because I never liked the stock ****.

It would be great if we could find out if Hurst offered a shorter chrome handle. The tech I talked to at Hurst was clueless.

I wonder how much work would it be to have something fabricated? Whenever I'm ready to go wtih this, I'll probably try to do something that's just about 1/2" higher than stock, maybe an inch (which isn't much)

Looks like it would be pretty hard to do if you wanted the shape the same. But if you covered up the entire handle with the boot and didn't care what it looked like under there, there wouldn't be much to it.

Thanks Jason. That's what I was referring to.

Anytime, Jimmy. Just trying to help. MGW has a handle for the 99-04's. I had one in my '03 and LOVED it! Wish they would come out with something for this Hurst shifter. It really needs to shortened and angled back.

I've only seen photos of how the chrome handle is attached, but if I had to guess I'd say that except for the handle the two shifters are probably identical. I measured the distance on mine from bolt center to bolt center and it is 7/8 of an inch. Hopefully that measurement will answer your question regarding interchangeability.

I was just wondering if they attached the same way. It sounds like they do since you're talking about the distance between the two holes. I was under the impression the stock style didn't attach to the shifter the same way the chrome handle does.

The first picture is supposed to be of the stock style shifter. Notice the handle goes straight down into the shifter. It's that picture that made me question if they could be swapped.
I'm assuming your shifter looks like the one in the second picture. If that's right, the two handles are definitely interchangable. Now if Hurst could just come up with a part number for the handle itself, I might order one to try it out.

Yes, the Hurst Shifter that uses the stock ball is like the one in the second pic, and the handle is interchangeable with other Hurst handles. So if anyone wants to got back to the stock ball, or get the chrome stick with T-handle, or whatever, a swap out is only two bolts away. The thread pattern on the sticks are different, so only the stock ball fits the shorter black stick.

I, personally, thought the chrome handle was too long, and I kind of like the stock ball since it matches the IUP very well. Plus, with the shorter black handle, the throw is even shorter than with the long chrome handle. I love my Hurst!

I've only let a couple of people drive my car, and the first thing they always say is "wow, the shifter throw is short!"

Here's a photochop of the 1-2 shift.

Yeah, that's the other thing I like about the one you have, Brad. Makes the throw even shorter!
I don't want to swap with anyone, but I would love to get one of those handles from Hurst and try it out.

Same here, wanted to keep the stock look inside.
Installed mine this weekend and love it! No rattles, no extra noise (except for the solid click into gear), no difference in handle vibration compared to stock. I did install the stock rubber rear bushing rather than the hard red urethane one after reading some of the posts here about the vibration issues.
I actually measured the stick throw before and after. Stock throw is 4.5", the Hurst throw is 2", 1st to 2nd!

I was waiting for the new one, couldn't stand it any long and bought the current one and installed it last weekend. I can't believe how short the shifts are. It took a little getting use to, and it does require more effort, but does click nicely into gear.

It makes it harder to eat and shift. With the stock shifter I could just nudge it out of gear and push it over to the next with a sandwich in my hand.

Hey MustangJack, not to hijack the thread, but where did you get the 281 badges on your shaker and the sticker on your radiator cover?

The 281 logo came from autobadges.com. I made the radiator cover one myself to look like an old air cleaner decal.

Didn't you read my screen name?

Yes, the throw of the Hurst shifter in my '05 is a LOT less than the throw of the Tri-Ax in my '03.

That thing looks impressive.
So what else is better about this one other than the stops?

Do you think that the billet Hurst will still rattle, like the standard Hurst? I cannot get rid of the rattle no matter what I try. I have posted about what I have tried, and nothing worked. I love the shortness of the shifts, but the rattle is crazy, when you hit 80mph in Overdrive, or if you get on the gas. Holding the shifter helps, but it is still sucks.
