FRPP Hot Rod Cams installed - Idle is now surging/bouncing - Any ideas?
Hello all,
Just got my FRPP Hot Rod cams installed, and while she does sound mean as hell, the car is barely staying running.
I got a FRPP Hot Rod specific tune from Doug @ Bamachips. It's the 93 race tune. He said he's tuned a few cars with these cams already, so I trust that he knows what he's doing.
Here are the main problems...
1) The car barely stays running while idling. It goes from about 400 RPM to 800 RPM and then back down... continuous cycle (although when not warmed up it stalls a few time). I thought maybe adjusting the idle would help, so I took it from 740 RPM to 940 RPM, and while it sounded like it wasn't going to die on me, it still bounced from 500 RPM to 900 RPM. So regardless, it bounces.
2) With Dougs tune at his pre-set idle - The car drops down to 250 RPM when taking it out of gear while slowing down for a stop light. It then goes back up to around 500 RPM and DOES NOT surge while I am slowing down. Once I get stopped completely, the surging starts again.
Any ideas anyone? I'm banging my head against the wall here. I've also emailed Doug and am awaiting his response.
Here is a video I took this morning (with the 940 RPM adjustment).

I can't comment on the surging, but the sound is amazing. So these are the NSR Hot Rod cams? I assume you've not done a before and after dyno to tell us horse power gains? These are on my list for engine mods. Thanks for the sound clip.

NSR??? That can't be safe.
I am by no means a cam expert, but I would assume the aggressive duration/lift that causes that excessive (But amazing sounding) Lope could not be very safe on stock valve springs.
Oh and by the way, my friend had a similar problem with his Comp3 cams. He eventually went with a dyno tune, and things are well.

Where did you get them? Did you pay for install? Where and how much?
Unlike the other cams that are out there, the FRPP Hot Rod cams get the lope by changing the exhaust and intake duration. the lift is only 1mm larger than stock, I believe. This is why they're perfectly safe with stock springs and such.

NSR = No Spring (replacement) Required.
I got them at www.suttonhp.com and had them installed yesterday at a FRPP authorized installation center.

Try cleaning your throttle body. also you may need to set the idle kind of high to keep it running although you want it low to get a lopey sound just try to find a happy medium after you get the throttle body nice and clean. As far as the springs go the stock spring binds at .512 lift. if your cams have at least .020 less lift then the coil bind figure then you should not have an issue. I had BBR stage 1 cams on my car which are .480 lift with the stock springs for about 3000 miles and the car was fine. no valve float or spring binding. BBR has used their stage 2 cams which are even more aggressive on their test mule car with the stock springs and run it very hard for a long time with no issues.
New tune seems to have helped. She idles consistently now. Only problem left is when coming off higher RPM, she drops to 450-500 RPM for a second or two and then comes back up to 800 or so and stays steady. I also need to take it on the road in a bit to test that as well. But I'm about to rip everything apart again and clean the **** out of the TB and MAF, so I'll do that first.
I'll keep you all posted, and will post another (better) video shortly.
