I really don't get the whole trend over the last 15 years or so of calling it "soul food" and portraying it as a black thing. Its just a Southern thing in general, been eating it all my life, my whole family cooks like that, everyone I know cooks those things. Its just a staple down here. Fried chicken, pork chops, turnip and collard greens, pinto beans (a hamhock in greens and beans is a necessity), fried okra, crowder peas, cornbread, etc. Its just what we eat.

I've known for a while I was a minority, never knew I was black though.

I must have been poor, lol. I didn't realize it until I got older and made some money. Never knew I was poor back then. Still eat the same stuff though, lol.
Watch some Food Network like Triple D or other channels about food. They always go to predominately black restaurants and rave about the "soul food", and its always just stuff that we eat all the time, the things I've been eating since I was old enough to eat solid food.

I made double dipped southern fried chicken in buttermilk a couple months ago. I used some cayenne in the batter…oh wow man it was so good, but i could here my arteries constricting lol

Anything we fry has cayenne in the batter. If I'm feeling lucky I'll dust the chicken/pork with sachere's extra spicy afterwards. If it's fried, it has to be hot enough for my nose and eyes to feel it. Having grown up in El Paso, TX, that means most of the stuff I fry is too hot for most everyone else. I don't fry as much as I used to.
