Already talked to Verizon. They told me a small server wouldnt be an issue. If I start racking up a large amount of data then yes. They will want me to get business.

I suggest doing some reading on raids, hosting, server Managment before trying to just throw live content out. Oh and den was rigt about your ISP, they figure out you're running a server and they may shut you off, or make you get a business level Internet, whic is not cheap. Not to mention I hope you have a good firewall and your personal stuff is on a different network. Cause your introducing a gateway to hacks
:/ well.. all my importand info is on my desktop. The server has no real valuable info. I figured hacks would be of little worry since its only two small local forums and a few small local websites. I dont really think I will see much actual traffic.
My server has been up for about 5 months now. Ive got putty down pretty good. Now as far as firewall. The Verizon router has one built in. Then my desktop and server have the factory ones.

Yea you need a real firewall, and don't think that because its a local site it won't be victim, users with malware getting on the site are easy ways to introduce it to your site.

We use sonicwall. The tz series is a good entry level, gonna cost you a few hundred. Also only need to open the ports that are needed, nothing else. Configure your web server on its own interface that's not trusted to the interface you use for your other network that has your home stuff on it. That's my suggestion. It's easier said than trying to configure though lol.

Hmmm... well. I was reading on firewalls for ubuntu servers and there was a free one called ufw? The reviews said it was good for small home servers. The interface thing I dont get lol.

Interface is the ports on a sw. I'm not sure about any of the software based firewalls like you're referring to

Well being its a small home server I think firewall software will suffice. Ill do some research on interface setup. Thanks for your help

As far as raid goes raid 1 seams to be what I need. Gonna order a sata 3 raid controller tonight.

The interfaces are just hte individual ports on the firewall itself. You can configure them for various things, but in this case you'd want the port your servers hooked into to have access to the WAN interface port, but not the rest of the network (where your personal crap is hooked up to)

Ok. So let me see if I get this. The server is static ip at 192.168.1.150 the ports are only open for that ip. The main pc is 192.168.1.100. It has 0 open ports. Is that what your talking about? Or am I wrong?

When I get home ill have to look and see if there is something in the router talking about wan.. pretty sure I saw something in there

You don't have alot of networking background do you? Not being mean just from what I can tell you don't. Sadly when it comes to hosting, the network side is nearly as involved as the server.

Lol no im self taught

I didnt get into computers until I was 16 because we didnt have one at home. Didnt get internet till I was 18. Everything I know is research and trial and error. Never been to school for it. Im quick at learning it though. I just need pointers lol. It makes sence to me once I see how its done. Honestly im surprized I know as much as I do with no training or family help .

The server was pretty involved ues. Bit I figured it out. Now to learn networking

Networking is my least favorite aspect of computing. With that said...good luck Trent. Lol.

I've thought about making my cloud available to friends and such, but I'm not ready to throw that much money at it. I'd definitely be getting a real hardware firewall and better AV before i start handing out the URL to idiots. Currently, i don't tell anyone my server's address to minimize unwanted or malicious traffic. Btw, i still get unwanted attempts.

Then I'd have to set up permissions and quotas too, and i don't really have time for all that right now.

For the HD's, I'd probably do RAID 5. Make sure you backup often...

More usable space and you won't have to add drives in pairs.

Raid 5 is my preferred you get storage and speed but rad 1 is definitely easier to rebuild if a drive fails. In his case I don't think raid. 5 is gonna be a real upgrade for performance.

Read his last statement. Read it real good because that's why I'm trying to stress a seperation of your personal and server network.

Raid 5 requires 3 or more drives. I have 2. And 3 tb should be plenty for 2 local forums...

You might Google "DMZ" and "VLAN" to get you started on some networking topics.
