Those appear to be resonated tips... Whether they reduce drone or just effect tone, one thing is for certain, you're taking one heck of a risk by cutting off you're existing 304 grade polished SS tips, then having to weld in the replacement tips only to find out they may not reduce the amount of drone prior to cutting off the original tips... Also, if I'm not mistaken, once the mufflers have been modified or tampered with, it voids the manufactures warranty... Therefore, I would recommend to mrkabc, if resonance drone is a factor, he would be far better off to consider purchasing resonators from Vibrant Performance which can be installed in the mid-pipe section after the H or X crossover section by either clamping or welding in...
In the meantime, I've attached the link for Vibrant Performance below for Mrkabc to check out, if he's interested!
Well The Op Just Mentioned The Drone So I'm Curious if it's Something He is Going To Live With or Try & Address. A Call To The Manufacturer Explaining His Disappointment after Replacing His Mufflers With the Same Model He Had and Lived With for Many Years Has The Dreaded Drone Would Be My First Course of Action Just to get a Feel For How Helpful They May or Not Be. Perhaps Another Model Muffler or Do They Have Any Suggestions in The Same Vein as The Resonators or Tips and At That Time Question Weather Changing Tips Would Be a Warranty Issue or Would it Even Be Effective.
What About the Resonators Have They any Input on That. Would They Be Willing to Do a Partial Refund to Offset The Costs. Surely By Now They Have Had Complaints Before on This Drone Issue.
On a Side Note I Found This Old Email I Sent To The Op Back in 2014! I Only Met a Few Folks in Person From My TMS Adventures AND The Op was The Only One Who Ever Came To My House. I Sent This Right After He Left. We Fooled With a Complete Radiator Hose Stat Setup I Had Out of a ROUSH Supercharger Install. We Went Back & Forth on Them For About Two Years Before Finally Finishing The Deal What is Ironic are My Parting Comments! I Had Pretty Much Exited TMS as a Regular By Then and it Was a Tough Time but I Would Still get The Odd Email from a Member and Drifted In & Out From Time To Time.
The Email Also Reminded Me How Bad My Hands Got Without Medication which was Far From Dialed in at This Point. Probably Another reason I Was Not Online Much. The First Few Years after Andrew My Son Passed are Blank in Many Spots. Did Not realize it Till Right Now Looking At The Old Emails. Kinda Scary. Anyhoo Here We Go!
Hello,

And Thanks for the Purchase I really appreciate it.
I would write more but my fingers are starting to cramp up. It happens.

All I can tell you is through many years of personal experience, all aftermarket mufflers are well known for producing drone with the exception of Corsa Performance Exhaust and the previous Ford Racing GT500KR mufflers A.K.A FR500S part# M-5230-S...
I had 2 different sets of Borla mufflers which both produce resonance drone... My first set was the Borla sport technically called Borla S-Type, I ended up selling them to one of our forum members here on TMS and then replaced them with my current Borla ATAK mufflers which also drone, but not as severe as the previous Borla S-Types had... Check out attachment thread 547438 below for complete details...
According to the additional thread attachments provided below, adding resonators to the exhaust system are the most effective way for reducing interior resonance drone, which is the reason I suggested to the OP to consider adding resonators, rather than take the risk of voiding his factory warranty by cutting off his existing Flowmaster tips in favor of welding in those resonated tips that may not help with reducing drone, but rather just tone down the overall volume...
As far as those Borla resonated tips you brought up, my question is why didn't Borla design their axle-back exhaust kits to include resonated tips to begin with, rather than just include the resonators inside the muffler core inlet sections...

Consider yourself fortunate that your Coffin mufflers didn't produce the drone issues... Other's like the old Ford Racing GTA mufflers manufactured by Supreme Performance didn't produce drone either, but unfortunately have since gone out of business...Anyhow, I knew that I should've went with the Ford Racing FR500S AKA GT500KR's before Ford Performance discontinued them, but I kept being brand loyal to Borla, despite knowing the drone factor...
I suppose that eventually, I'll end up purchasing resonators from Vibrant Performance to at least tame down the drone... From my understanding, Borla did finally redesign their exhaust line up beginning in 2011 when the Coyote 5.0 4v made it's debut in the second gen S197 Mustang which now include resonators in the exhaust tip section, but did not upgrade the muffler design for the older 2005-10 S197 models...
As mentioned earlier, Borla should've designed the resonators in the exhaust tip section from the very beginning, to begin with... I also considered Corsa Performance exhaust, but they were just way beyond my price range budget, so once again, I made the decision to stay with Borla.. My reason, the only time I really notice drone is when cruising at highway speeds on the interstate between 55-60MPH while in 5th gear when under 2200RPM...
Once above 2200RPM the drone goes away... There's also no drone when driving on local streets/roads when not in 5th gear... At any rate, I've since been able to tolerate putting up with the drone for the most part...

Reason: Typo Error
My GT500KR aka FR500S mufflers have similar perforated "resonator tips" .... I never thought they really did much, but maybe that is part of their drone-elimination magic

By placing the resonators directly at the tip location cancel out the lower frequencies more effectively than just placing them in the core sections... Also, from my understanding, the FR500S design has an open space between the cores in the muffler housings which also help when it comes to cancelling out the lower frequencies that produce resonance drone...The open space is sort of like having an open chamber between the muffler cores...
