I think all the colors. We've got a grayish sea green mountaineer and a blue explorer and they've both got some paint issues.

Me too. I've had 4 of them that I've put over 700K miles on combined.

We've got two. They're awesome. Very comfortable, spacious, drives well, get reasonable mileage.
But are notorious for three problems. One, the back panel under the rear window glass will crack. Two, the paint will flake off because its frickin terrible. And three, the transmissions start having issues after 150k miles.

I've heard about the back panel cracking on the model you're talking about. 02-05 I think, not sure right now.
The one above has the 5.0 and has been great. I just drove it on my trip and it averaged 20 mpg over about 1300 miles (mostly highway though). And I had forgotten how long it had been since I changed the plugs until I got back and started looking through some records. 130K on the plugs, so I changed them yesterday. They still looked perfect, and the gap was still right on them.
My 01 XLT with the 4.0 SOHC has been pretty much trouble free as well until last year, and still looks good despite being in the woods every week and driven all over the US from top to bottom, coast to coast.
It developed a very minor oil leak about 220K and appeared to be leaking around the oil pan gasket. Since I can't get under cars like I used to in order to work on things, I took it to my buddy's shop to put an oil pan gasket on. When they took the pan off, it had pieces of plastic type material in it, which ended up being pieces of the timing chain guides. With that many miles and what it would cost to replace them, I just let him put a Jasper motor in it.
About 250K now and still going strong, trans, 4wd, etc. all still stock. (knock on wood).
Gas mileage on it isn't that great even with the 5 speed auto. 4WD, with 4.10 gears, about 17-18 is the best you see out of it. I've gotten 24 on a trip to the coast in the 2000 Limited 5.0 on the highway back before all the gas went to an ethanol blend, and its got 3.73 gears in it.

Considering my dad's GMC had to have it's engine and tranny replaced at 100k miles, 150k for the tranny ain't so bad.

Coming home from out of State last night had a Chally wanted to race. There's this podunk town just before the Oregon border that has several 90* turns and a strict 30 mph. Then back to 2 lane that's 65 in CA but within a mile drops to 55 in OR. The Oregon section is a favorite for OSP to write tickets because of the drop in speed limit.
So I see this orange Chally in the town pull out behind me and I'm pretty sure it was an 08 - so it would have been the 6.1L which I should be fairly even with till the top end according to Edmunds. Coming down the hill into Oregon would have been great to nail it on a mile straightaway but a) I don't street race, b) the cops sit behind grain silo's at the end of the straightaway and nail people for speeding all the time.
Sure enough he nails it and I just kept it on cruise at about 60. No cops were out though.
Two things stood out.
1. It sounded great at WOT. It was the automatic. Took him quite awhile to shift though so it wasn't all that quick to redline. I've never had a Mustang pass at WOT but this really did sound awesome.
2. His exhaust stunk. Like a 60's muscle car. Out of tune maybe? Or do modern engines still smell rich at WOT like the 60's-70's?

Even stock, it will give you a tingle when you hear it under a bridge or bouncing off of a car or wall next to you. It sounds nasty, especially after it got a few thousand miles on it. After about 4000 rpm it really sings, makes people turn their heads. Its a lot louder and more distinctive than my SGT was and it had the FRPP mufflers on it.
The SRT motors sound pretty good (better than an LS motor) but not great. Stock they are muffled down pretty well (but the tone just isn't the same as a 4 valve Ford motor).
Here the exhaust on the SRT Challenger (one I almost bought). Converters up front front right off the manifolds, big muffler that both pipes feed into, and dual resonator/mufflers out back.

The further south you get the better the view.
