Same here, I don't mind the heat so much, but when you mix in that humidity it really puts a hurting on me. Its like trying to breathe through a wash cloth soaked in scalding hot water.

It's been really hot here too. We get really bad humidity here too. I think we are going to hit 97 today, but I'm not sure what the heat index will be. We did get some much needed rain last night.

Anyone got any suggestions on getting rid of some bees? It's in the 90's here and humid, so I just went to get into the pool and more than the usual one or two occasional bees are flying around the deck. I can't see where they are building, but there are going in and out under it and staying near the edge. So much for the swim.

What kind of bees are we talking about? Honey bees, yellow jackets, wasps, hornets?

I think they're hornets. They build nests that look like this.

Umm... they sting? Both dogs have already been stung by some. We always have them around, but this year there seems to be more around, and more aggressive. Never had a dog get stung before.

I think they're hornets. They build nests that look like this.

That's a wasp nest, if you're talking about the type that is exposed under porches, rooflines, etc.

This is a hornets nest I got in the woods one winter a few years ago,

That's a gallon milk jug next to it

So I'm going to assume you are dealing with a wasp nest, which generally leaves them exposed when they are on it, unlike the hornet which are protected inside the nest.

First you're going to have to find the nest, it does no good to try and kill them away from the nest flying around, its futile. They will go back to the nest at night, so first thing in the morning, or just before sunset is the best time to watch where they are coming from or going to. When you find it, once again, first thing in the morning or just before dark is the time to kill it. They will all be there, and they are lethargic and less aggressive. Many of the commercial wasp sprays will take care of an average nest. Look for the type that sprays a stream 10-12 feet, not a mist type spray. When they are all there, soak it down.

Now for the less environmentally friendly method that my dad, grandad, etc. always used (and I do too for a big nest). If the nest where you have room to toss something at it, take a tin can (like an empty vegetable can) fill it with gasoline, get as close as you can, and sling the contents directly on the nest (not the whole can, just think of tossing a drink in someones face like the movies ) They will just all drop to the ground dead. Done deal.

It should be no problem finding it, I just haven't poked my head under the deck yet since they are busy going in and out. The deck is about 4.5 feet off the ground, so no problem getting under. I'll have to try the stream stuff. My brother-in-law had used some on some nests in the past that were being built near the front door. This one is just hidden from direct view so it will be a little trickier.

Go out there tonight with a flashlight and look around under there. Shouldn't be a problem finding it then if you know the general area where they are. They will be all over it.

Are you allergic, a bee sting is equivalent to a little pinch. Even a wasp sting is little more than some burning sensation.

I've had two long island iced teas and ventured out there now... It's a little more that what I expected... and not wasps...
