They need to make that an option on new cars, it'd have to be cheaper than an ol' lady.

These points hold true for a driver trapped inside trying to get out without help?
$50 bucks a good price? (2nd owner says never used)

Spring loaded center punch. Cheap, compact, and will take out a window with a click of a button if you're in a position where you can't move much.

Then there's always these....

I'll have to look at those - the spring loaded center punch my dad had (40 yrs ago) retracted the punch - didn't push the punch.

As for these, seems to me I would have to swing like hammer (and doesn't say how long they are). Whereas if the spike is in the end of the knife I can grip like a knife and swing at the window with my left hand.

And so now that I think about it, I guess its best to get free from the belt before breaking the window... cause I imagine with the window up water is filling slower...
Vs break the window, water gushes in, then try to cut the belt! lol

Hmm... there seems to be a discrepancy on the Kershaw. A number of the 1675's on ebay say they are 440A stainless (55-57 RC). That's the 'softest' of the 440's but still great steel. Might need to sharpen a little more often but its not like one would use this blade all the time - unless you work in Rescue.

However, the Kershaw website, and a few on ebay, say its the better Sandvik 14C28N (58-60 RC). Wonder if, when, and why Kershaw upgraded the blade?

Thats a great tool for a civilian to have handy in their car. it doesnt take much to break a window with a hardened tip like that. I hear viagra can make it happen as well

Also the spring loaded breaks like I am talking about dont have a button, you basically push it in to a certain point against the glass and all of a sudden it will spring back out with alot of force. Cheap adn highly effective. http://www.thefirestore.com/store/pr...spring_loaded/ is what I have and use.

Yeah free yourself prior to havign to hold your breathe IMO.

Also it doesnt take much to bust out a side or rear window. knife or hammer would work great. I like the hammer cause less chance of you sending your fist through along with the knife.

Also as far as length, 13cm = about 5.2" so easy enough to fit in a glove box.

Also for you guys that are into survival type equipment, these can be a life saver! http://www.survivalstraps.com

Hmm if you find any info out, lemme know, as im curious. My tanto one is the 1670BLKST model and has Jul 08 stamped on blade.

My rescue model is 1675BLKST with Feb 04 stamped on blade.

Most - but not all - of the 1675BLKST's say the better steel. But these are ebay guys so I'll go back with that model to the Kershaw site.

The 1675RDST (Regular Duty?) are most all the 440A. Course 440A is still a good steel. It doesn't hold an edge quite as well, but would be easier to sharpen. However, its the serations that would probably be doing the work in this situation if you couldn't release the belt and had to cut it.

thanks for those links!

That's what I was trying to get at, but I didn't write it correctly. Got about 5 different things going on at the same time here.

Yeah, the corner of the window would be a much better spot than he chose, but in an emergency like my potential drowning, getting cut would be the last thing on my mind.

Kershaw shows both models are the Sandvik 14C28N steel. So maybe there was a change at some point??

Pretty cool table. I don't really know that much about steel (but want to learn) so most of my familiarity is the 440's. The RC is on the right.

http://www.kershawknives.com/knifete...&brand=kershaw

EDIT: FWIW, most people I know are pretty positive about Buck's holding their edge. (The old Rigid's [USA] were 440C.) Here's the steel in most of their knives:

420HC Steel

This is Buck’s standard blade material because it combines the excellent wear resistance of high carbon alloys with the corrosion resistance of chromium stainless steels. Add our exclusive heat-treat process for superior corrosion resistance and you have excellent tensile strength, hardness and wear resistance. 420HC Steel is a High Carbon (HC) version of standard 420 martensitic stainless steels – they can be can be hardened to a Rockwell hardness of Rc 58.

Nah, just a lot going on. The ribeyes were fantastic, now I'm eyeballing the butter pecan ice cream, knowing full well if I eat it that I'll be on the toilet within 2 hours with stomach cramps and explosive results. Decisions, decisions..........

Just noticed a baby blue '70 fastback parked on the street in Magnum Force where they're staking out the hotel.

BOOM! BOOM! (and like the Pro that he was, McQueen carefully conceals from the unsuspecting eye that the rifle jams.)
