I'm so disappointed. I have almost 22k miles on my car, and I started hearing transmission whine today after I got to the parking garage at work. Now I'm hearing it even more and more. The whine is similar to supercharger whine (gear whine) and is most prominent in gears 1-2, with the audible whine diminishing more and more as you reach 6th gear along with highway speeds.

Guess I'll be making an appointment for the dealer to have her checked out. Based on some of the other posts with transmission whine, I hoping for the best outcome with the Ford dealership.

FYI - my transmission had barely any shifting issues, only the occasional hard time getting into 1st or Reverse. It never whined and had almost silent transmission operation under most conditions.

Well look at the good side. You might get a brand new tranny at 22k

Can someone more mechanically inclined than myself explain what exactly is happening with the gear whine and how it is causing damage?

Luckly we have not had any come into our shop yet. But from the research I've done, And I'm not sure this is accurate, the bearings at not lubricated well enough and they start seizing. The shaft itself gets hot enough that it turns purple.
Now I'm not positive that this is for shure it but its what I've read. Guess I will see if someone ever has an issue in my area

Before you take your car to the dealer and have it sitting there for who knows how long, try switching out your tranny fluid first.

Redline MTL. Drive it for 100-200 miles and if it's still making the noise then take it into the dealer.

Just my opinion.

I was thinking the same thing. Do a fluid swap, then see how it functions afterwards.

That may not be a good idea. If the Redline MTL is still in the MT-82 when the dealer first sees it...there could be a warranty question. How could he prove the noise started before he switched fluid? Can they tell it is not the original fluid, I don't know, but is it worth the risk?

I would not do anything, until the dealer sees' it, hears' it and makes a warranty claim to Ford. Possibly try the TSB fluid change while they have the car, and then they (Ford) are still responsible if it dies. Just my .02..

I was actually talking about this subject on another website (SVTPerformance) earlier today with a guy named UnleashedBeast. He's a lubrication expert and has helped me out a ton with fluid information.

He told me that the stock fluid is a very light 75w90 gear oil. In terms of viscosity, it's a light 40 grade lubricant. So after hearing that, that leads me to believe that it's not a strong lubricant at all. Most of the MT-82 tranny problems are because the fluid isn't strong enough as it needs to be. I've also read multiple posts on multiple forums about people switching out to Redline MTL and all their tranny problems went away after driving on it for a couple hundred miles.

Here's a chart he gave me:

I would talk to daysha before taking it in. She makes every thing fast and smooth.

Still.. there could already be bearing damage done. The new fluid might make the noise go away but it won't repair the damage. I would let ford do their thing. Hopefully the tranny fails and he gets a brand new one. Then I would do the fluid change. That way I know there are no pre exsisting conditions with the tranny.

You have a point. It's just really hard for me to believe there's bearing damage at 22k miles. It's insane to imagine but possible at the same time.

stopped reading when i saw the s/n "UnleashedBeast" i've read too much of his bull**** on the svt performance forum to care what he has to say. i feel sorry for people that listen to someone like that on the internet and dare to call them an "expert"

he knows what is better to put inside these engines than the ford engineers who designed it! right?! :rolls eyes:

It's possible. His wouldn't be the first case. There are plenty more ppl complaining of this issue.

I'm thinking that a bearing, race, or internal wear finally reached a tipping point. I drive about 80-miles per day commuting to/from work, and racked up those 22k miles in 11.5 months.

I would have expected someone reporting this type of sudden change if I had just gone to the race track or drag strip, which it's never been, but this was just after getting off the highway from one of my many daily commutes, just as 40-mile drive.

People like you really crack me up...unleashedbeast as well as many other venders out there (rp, amsoil) are on there and agree with him. The notion of ford offering the very best product, and telling us to do the right thing for performance and longevity purposes is a joke. Ford tells you to use the lighter oil because they save money in regs/fines for it period, end of story. Ford is not concerned about offering the very best in everything, they are interested in offering a product that is sufficent while maximizing there profit. These same engineers didn't put forged rods n pistons in our high revving 11:1 compression engines because it was gonna cost an extra 11 bucks an engine. 11 bucks!!!!!!! my point is, the things that these engineers are saying is not totally derived from performance all the time, but business most of the time. Sorta like our mt-82......

you sound like a broken record..i've heard this a million times.

yada yada yada ford is putting inferior fluids in our cars to cut corners and save money and we are better off going rogue and listening to "internet expert" vendors.

god forbid any of us put what is recommended in our owner's manual and on the engine cap!!!!! that would definitely be a very bad thing and screw us over!!! ahhhhhhhh..please internet expert save my car from it's inevitable damage from listening to what the manufacturer recommends!

Thanks, but I think Ford will get to diagnose and troubleshoot my car while it's under warranty. If my car was out of warranty, I would probably just buy another transmission, but I truly think Ford would benefit from diagnosing a higher mileage transmission problem like mine, compared to all the one's that report shifting problems early on.
