Another 2011 GT engine failure

Hello guys.
Glad to be a member of this great forum, just wish I was joining you guys under different circumstances.
About one week ago when I was returning from work, I noticed the engine was revving with high RPMs showing, I pulled my foot from the gas pedal and the engine started working at normal RPMs. However, I noticed a weird noise coming from the engine all the way back home.
When my wife took it to the Ford authorized shop they said that when they took a fuel sample they discovered traces of oil in the fuel. The shop guys said that the engine is dead and it looks like the fuel system did not survive either...The shop rep said that it looks like someone vandalized the car and put oil in it to cause harm which he said will not be covered under warranty. It sounded very unlikely as I always park my car in my driveway, and I only use it to drive to work. I park it at Rockefeller center in Manhattan and never had any problems with them. I always tip them and had only positive experience. I buy fuel only at one location at our local BP station and always use the same pump and the same fuel type. There were no modifications done to the car and the only time I took it to a shop is to change oil about two months ago to the same place where the car is right now. A StateFarm person came to examine the car but he could not complete the investigation because he needed the engine taken apart. The garage guys said they need an authorisation from me to start working on it because if StateFarm refuses to cover the costs I would be responsible to pay for it.
I never performed any modifications on the car, never raced it, did not drive it last winter at all. The car has never been to a car wash - I always hand wash it myself to avoid scratched on the paint. The car is a 2011 Mustang which has only 7000 miles on it!
Can you please give me any suggestion on what i should do next? Is there any way to find out if there were any similar cases reported in the past? It looks to me that there is some kind of an engine defect which Ford has to cover under it's warranty. I have a brand new car which is under warranty and a full-coverage insurance.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Yigal.

Sounds like a pretty crappy situation. If there was oil in the fuel tank, it's definitely not something that is covered under the new car warranty, so even though it would be nice of Ford to help you out, it's not their responsibility.

If the shop is stating that this was either vandalism of some sort, or possibly and issue with a service station being contaminated, then get that information in writing and present it to your insurer.

With that said I think the best course of action would be to contact Ford Customer Service and get the car to a dealer. They can then determine what the failure is and it's root cause. If it's a defect with the engine, it should be covered under your warranty. If it was vandalism or something along those lines, it should be picked up by your insurer. The car in that situation is already where it needs to be to have a repair or replacement.

If there was oil in the fuel .. it would be smoking like crazy out the tail pipe while burning the oil ...

Thanks guys

I just received a call from the shop, they said Ford agreed to replace the engine, but they said if it happens again I won't be covered. As much as I love my car it will make me very uneasy to drive a car which will not be covered under warranty... If at least I new what caused it I would know what not to do. Really loved my GT.

Hello Yigal,

Welcome to the forum. My name is Deysha with Ford Customer Service. Even if this is a warranty repair, you will still have to authorize your dealer to diagnose and determine the cause of the problem. Once they find the cause, if it is a manufacturer’s defect, then your warranty will take care of the teardown, etc. I’d still like to escalate this for you and get it looked into further. Please PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, and contact info so I can help.

Deysha

Thank you Deysha.
The dealer just called and said that Ford agreed to replace the engine. However, they said if it happens again in the future, they will not cover it which makes me afraid driving it again...

No failure I can think of would cause oil in the fuel tank... I 100% agree that someone put it in your tank(like the old sugar in the tank). If you got ford to cover something they didnt need to cover good for you and you should count yourself lucky.

Right. But oil in the gas shouldn't tear a motor up...

That is my thought.....how does oil in a fuel tank ruin a new engine......diesel fuel, yes...oil, no unless in such an amount that the fuel would not burn. Then the engine just stops. Plus....sugar would be cheaper than a qt. of oil and take less........ Is the fuel cap area damaged?

So, is Ford replacing and/or cleaning the entire fuel system?

If you are concerned about someone putting stuff in your tank again, get a locking cap.

Does the garage you use have security cameras?

Here is a link to a Ford locking fuel plug. If you believe someone tampered with your car, this will stop them. I have one and its is worth the piece of mind you will receive while parked in public places.

They said that they will cover the oil cleaning but not the gas tank cleaning which I agreed to pay for. I went to the garage to ask some questions, they do have cameras, and said they will provide all the footage necessary. Will definitely buy a locking fuel cap just for a piece of mind.

depends on the oil. Who knows what type it is. Could be peanut oil or something.

Exactly my thought.

I call bs on the reasoning from the shop without proof. And if it was vandalism, Ford would hardly pay for it. But glad to hear they're replacing it.

Why would diesel/kerosene damage an engine? Wouldn't the engine just stop? Takes much more compression to ignite diesel.

It does not damage either...my mis-wording....it is a real pain to clean it out.

Also, if vandalism, call your ins. company, I would.

Oil of any type would not destroy the engine by the injectors spraying it in a fine mist. Period.

It will..
1 try to burn it
2 stop running.

blown number 8, mods on car, revert to stock, put oil in gas tank.. hides evidence?? not saying he did, but i agree with texasboneking.. oil cannot destroy an engine, it will either burn or stop running..
