Talk me out of changing my order again to get a GT
#221
I am probably more confused myself now more than ever. I had initially thought 3.73 gears were a must have. I have read all the gear threads which made it worse.
Gas mileage matters to me also. ![Fear](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/fear.gif)
From looking at the window stickers there seems to be no difference in the ratings no matter what gear is chosen. I just wonder in the real world what if any a person would notice? I am no drag racer but I have had cars before that were geared to high and I will never made that mistake again. I guess I will sit tight and listen for the reviews from other owners in the future.

1969 Z29 Camaro with 302/ 290 Gross (Underrated buy Gross Standard but likely overrated by todays SAE Net) M22 Muncie and 3.73 Rear Gears.
2.20 (1st) x 3.73 = 8.21
2011 Mustang GT with 302/416 (Actual SAE J1349 Results)
MT82 and 3.31 Rear Gears
3.66 (1st) x 3.31 = 12.11
2.43 (2nd) x 3.31 = 8.04
It has a 50% lower 1st and almost the same overall ratio in 2nd as 1st gear in a 1969 Z28. That is with base gears.
Compared to the old TR3650 M5 the new MT82 M6:
With 3.31 because of the new 1st gear ratio you have a better low than the 3.55.
With 3.55 you have a better 1st than 3.73 with almost as tall an OD as 3.31.
With 3.73 you have almost the same 1st as 4.10 and the OD is almost the same as the 3.55.
On top of that the gears are much closer so you use 4 instead of 3 in the 1/4 mile.
All of thats before you even consider the large horsepower and torque increase.
On the street with 3.55 from 20 mph roll in 1st the car will spin through 1st, go sideways on the 1-2 shift and bark 3rd hard. I really dont see a street application where you will ever have a shortage of gear multiplication with any of the choices.
It basically comes down to your application. 3.55 wont hit the limiter in 4th in the 1/4 mile stock and is good for 155 mph in 5th. Its a good all-round gear.
3.31 will "melt" the tires in 1st on the street and get the best highway mileage. Its the general street gear.
3.73 will have the least mph split between gears and have the highest rpm in 5th. In my opinion its the best choice for the canyon specialist, open track enthusiast or die hard strip guy who will be changing to taller stickies and a higher rpm limiter pronto.
Car and Driver got almost the exact same times out of a 3.73 Coupe and 3.31 Convertible.
3.73 Coupe, 0-60 4.6, 13.2 @ 109
3.31 Convertible, 0-60 4.7, 13.2 @ 108
Yes both times are pitiful but when you consider the Vert was almost 150 lb heavier its hard to see the advantage of the gears,

I still wonder how they get away with giving them the same rated gas mileage even with all three gear sets?
![Dunno](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/dunno.gif)
I have also decided against the brembo brake package because I would never fully realize the benefits of it. Not to mention the tire replacement cost.

I look forward to reading about you guys who have these gears along with the others as well.

Thank you for the detailed information. I had at first thought the OP in this thread may have made a mistake getting the 3.31 gears. His application may be like mine and that means drag racing is not that big of a deal. While I had originally thought 3.73's were a must have now I struggle to decide between the 3.31 and 3.55. It appears the 3.31's even are very good for everyday driving and will deliver good economy on the road. I am thinking about splitting the difference. Just dont know yet and need to drive them.

So, considering the car will be on all seasons I am thinking 3.55 gears would be more than enough.

That said the engine is so smooth and utterly unstrained sounding at 40 mph you have to look at the tach to tell if you are in 4th, 5th, or 6th with the 3.55. I would think 45 mph would be similar with 3.31.
