So I bought my 2012 Mustang GT a couple weeks ago with 30600 miles. I don't know why, but I am scared to run my car hard and everytime I do I worry about my motor. I guess what I am asking is for you guys to put my mind at ease and tell me the 5.0 motors are completely bullet proof. .

 

You have 20k left of warranty, if something has happened yet it probably won't for a long time.

I have a 2014 GT Track Pack I bought brand new last summer. I've already had it at a road course. 4 hours of 5-7k RPM just from one weekend. Takes it all day long. Enjoy the V8. That's what it's made for. I'm gonna quote someone else on this forum.

How about this. Over 100 passes last year in my 11GT with a Bama tune which raised the rev limiter to 7,000 RPM's and hitting 6900 RPM's 3-4 times on every single pass. Not a single problem

I even have a V6 with over 60,000 miles on it and a supercharger. Just yesterday I was out playing in that hitting the rev limiter multiple times and spinning my tires at 5,000 RPM's. Actually my V6 is a different fun...it spins when boost kicks in...so it's a fun feeling punching it, having traction, and then all of a sudden boost kicking in and having no traction at over 4,000 RPM's...lol.

But seriously, these cars are much more stout that you'd imagine. (Except for that piece of crap MT-82)...but ignoring that...haha...you can drive them hard. I probably drive my car harder than 99% of owners and haven't had one single problem with either my GT or V6. The key really is to be smooth with everything. people break their cars by being "jerky" with them. I like to call what I do as a smoothed out aggression. Don't slam the breaks. Don't jerk the steering wheel super hard taking a corner at 100mph. If you have a manual, don't drop the clutch...etc. All that stuff is completely unnecessary and why some people break cars more than others.

 

Sorry there not, Its hit and miss.. You should be fine you already have over 30k miles on it.

I put over 1800 miles in 2days driving from tx to va, motor is in excellent condition, done oil changes every 5k, I use BG MOA oil treatment that takes care of any sludge formed from oil burning and BG 44k for fuel injection cleaning, these 2 products were recommended by ford dealer near me, I also use oil separators on both sides. the only thing good about 2011 to 2014 gt is the 5.0 motor, hopefully these motors run reliably till 150k.

 

I just had this same thing come up with a couple friends. We have a friend that has a super snake that he drove 200 miles and since its sat inside his garage,,probably a year . Drive it hard life is short and if you dont whoever gets it after you will run **** out of it after you paid for it,,so heck yeah,,run it.

 

Just have a bit of "mechanical empathy" and you should stay pretty trouble-free.

Allow the engine to reach operating temps before you wind it up.

Allow the motor to cool down (drive around gently for a few miles...) after flogging it before shutting it off.

Don't beat the hell out of it on really hot days.

Strictly follow your oil change guidelines...I have been running Ford's blend (at ~3000 miles) but full synthetic is probably better.

Take a look at your owner's manual and budget for all of the service intervals.

Run a reputable brand 93 (or highest possible) octane gas to minimize knock risk (though the ECU gives you a bit more timing on high octane fuel so the risk may be the same, regardless )

I had a new member of our RC plane club ask if he could take a drive in my GT after I mentioned i had one. I thought ya right like that's going to happen - NOT!

As a fellow RC flying/Mustang fan, I am 100% certain you made the right call.


My club is a mix of great guys but each of them is a hooligan to some varying degree.

 

If some of my hooligan friends ask to drive my GT I always ask them in return if I could sleep with their wife. When they reply back with an emphatic NO I remind them that my car is just as sacred as their wives, they understand then. LOL!

All the guys that live here in Germany that have 5.0s haven't had any problems running the autobahn at 150mph or driving on the Nurburgring. One of which is a 2011 with over 50K on the odometer and 686 HP after his Procharger and mods. Nothing to worry about as long as you take care of her after you are done playing for the day.
