6th would be cool, but it's only useful when cruising on the freeway. Doesn't seem like it would offer any performance advantage (or parity) with Chevy or Dodge... unless we want to get in a mpg battle in the muscle car war. Certainly not a deal breaker (agree w/ zzcoop) but Ford really does need to get with the times (thank you sharpie).

I agree with Boomer. I don't understand the 6 speed vs. 5 speed problem, either. I rarely use more than 4 of the 5 gears, now (start in 2nd, most of the time) and often only 3 (2, 3, 5 or 2, 4, 5 depending on traffic & circumstances). The only need I see for a 'Stang to have a 6-speed manual is the "Me too" attitude.
Now in an automatic, I can see it. The more gears, the shorter the shifts = improved CAFE. But in a manual, especially with a torquey V8, it's really overkill. Fun, perhaps, for going through the gears, but certainly not necessary. Nor even particularly desirable.

Well, a 6-speed could show that Ford is keeping up with the Joneses, as the Camaro and Challenger both have 6-speeds. And that sixth gear could help fuel economy a bit by keeping cruising RPM's low.

Could Help? Believe me, I've had both. 6th definitely helps, especially if you're going to put in 3.73's or 4.10's. If you do a lot of highway driving, it's a must.

I don't know why everyone has their panties in a bunch. We all knew there wouldn't be any powertrain (engine OR transmission) changes until 2011. I just hope Ford can stay afloat until October or November 2009 so we can get our 2011 MY 5.0s then. If they axe that, I will be really disappointed. And didn't we already know that the 2010 is coming with the Bullitt's 3.73s...and THAT car had a 5 speed. Boohoo! Wah wah wah!
However, I do agree with the aluminum shift **** not being very desirable. Nostalgic? Of course, and some would say better than the silver plastic shift **** in the Premier Trim Package of 2008 and 2009. Easily changed though. I just hope they can make the F-150/Expedition's 6sp auto, and the T56 available for the 2011. The GT500 can keep the better, albeit most likely more expensive, TR6060 for now. The T56 is definitely stout enough for V6/GT duty...

For guys that own the Bullitt...is the **** directly metal? or is it clear coated like the premium/IUP Mustang shifter? (metal with clear coat)
More than likely it'll be coated as to not wear on the numbers, and to save your hand from burning.
I've never had my shifter burn my hand....ever....hot sun or not.
The seats...those are a different story.

why ***** about a six speed when a 5 is perfectly fine...... for instance my uncles saleen s281 extreme is a ***** to drive since 1 a 6 speed with 4:10's light weight driveshaft and flywheel.... your constantly shifting and its always jerking...... i dont see a problem with a 5 speed in a 4.6 you can actually crusie and putt it around in town

For those of you saying it is a big difference. I would ask what the gearing ratios for both 5 and 6 speed are. The last time I looked it up. The final gear was about .02 different. I am not sure 2/100ths of a gear is a big difference.

I think a lot of people have written why it SHOULD be a 6-spd (not necessarily a make or break thing). A long time ago a 3-spd and 4 -spd was enough!!! And again, I think it has a lot to do with FORD being so late to progress. They just recently put 5 and 6 speed transmissions in their trucks when other companies (like Toyota) have been doing it for the last 5 years. I've had 5 Mustangs and 2 Cobras, and I'm sure I'll have another. But it would be nice if Ford would be the leader or first to do something rather than bringing someting nice to the table after everyone else has. Much like HID lights, Nav system,r 19 in wheels, painted mirrors or heated seats.........we don't "need" a 6-spd..but I'm sure a helluva lot of people would love to have their car with all of these right off the bat. It shouldnt take Ford a couple of years through a model cycle to put the extras out.
