Take a lens like a 50mm f1.8 (which all Nikon owners should have imo) and set it to full open on a pic like that and you'd probably only have about two feet of the hood in focus, a shutter speed of 500+ and the ISO as low as it will go.
Hope that helps.

That's referred to by camera dorks as a shallow "depth of field". It is directly related to how open you have set your aperture. The more open (lower "f-stop" number) your set at, the shallower it is. You will then compensate for proper exposure with speeding up your shutter speed and lowering you ISO sensitivity (considering a normal level of light is available).

In other words, if you want that blurred background, all you have to so is use a lens with a lower F stop. They make 50 mm 1.4s and 1.2s, but the price goes up significantly. I compromised with the 1.8. The 50mm is my FAVORITE lens.
Lower f stops allow more light through, making it more worthy of taking shots with lower light (like dawn or dusk) with NO flash
Btw, those shots were taken in full manual mode.... F stop 1.8, 1/3200 or so shutter speed, ISO 100.
Thanks Man.

Lol, I've been up since 5AM after not going to bed till 11 last night, waiting for the ex-gf and her daughter to get home after having dinner with the guy she was seeing before me which she's now started talking with again, 3 days after we broke up.
And why are we still living together?
Because my condo is getting put back together, I'm remodeling it myself. Can't move back in until late April probably
