I just installed the D3 tonight, and I have the ipod touch. It works perfectly for music. The video playback doesn't work though...

Nope....... I use an Ipod Nano with the D3. It works flawlessly including the video playback, however the video is a bit tricky because you have to plug the Ipod into the D3, turn the D3 onto Ipod video mode, then unplug the Ipod itself and set the video output to external mode then plug it back in. After that, works like a charm- sounds harder than it is.

Not being a friend of electrical components.... how hard is the install ?? The iPod control is a huge plus. I would have to rely on that because it seems that it will only take one CD/DVD right ??

If you're using the nav can you play a CD or does the DVD need to be in the car at all times ?

I just got a iPod solution that doesn't quite work for me so I am starting to explore other options.

If you've never installed a radio before, then it could be a bit difficult for you. There are also extra steps if you have the Shaker because you need to install the 5v regulator. Between the wiring harness, regulator, VSS wire, dimmer switch wire, navi antenna, and Ipod control wire, there is a lot of work to do. This was my second install, and it took me several hours.

As far as your question about the CD, if you want to use the full functionality of the Navi, then the DVD must be in at all times. Otherwise it is very limited. However, the Ipod controls are so awesome I can't see why I'd ever need a CD in my car again.

Hey Tom, how exactly do you do this? I read a write up, and tried it, but couldn't find the "TV out" setting on the iPod? And were is the setting for the iPod video mode? As always, thanks for the assistance bud! Drove the car again, and this system is ******* awesome!! Even the stock speakers sound better now.

Never installed any radio in any car. The closest I've come was putting in the BrandMotion iPod controller onto my stereo, it was plug & play. I have the Shaker 1000 and once you get into the regulator & such.... my eyes roll over and start considering having it done for me.

Circuit City has free installation... so we'll see.

The rears and the uppers on the doors seem to work just fine.
My lower subs do not work either, how did you correct this?

Hey Tom, ...

I just finished installing a Z2 today, ... but I used a 2.2K resistor in series with the blue/white wires going to the subs, ... works great, no pops!!!!
and extremely easy to do too!

Steve, just take the red & white RCA cables and start plugging them until you can hear them turn on. Trust me, once you make the correct connection, you'll know. Its amazing how much better the D3 makes the factory speakers sound.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you need to connect the blue/white wire labeled "System Remote" to one of the two coming from the smaller aftermarket harness. Mine didn't turn on just with the RCA plugs.

Or...

Maybe you're just not hearing them. Mine didn't really kick in until I turned the loudness on in the settings.

I finally finished my installation yesterday. It was pretty simple, but I had hell dealing with the mute pin. The **** thing just wouldn't go into the new hole, and - you guessed it - I broke the connector on the end of the yellow and black wire. I had a ten year old harness from some other car laying around, so I canibalized a pin out of there. I also finally threw in a voltage regulator... that pop was just getting annoying as hell. Overall, I'm very happy with the unit. It automatically connects to my PPC6800 phone, which is the only reason I upgraded from the Pioneer 9800BT (which is a huge turd).

Thanks to everyone here for all of the excellent info!

Does anyone know about connecting up either the Illumination / Dimmer wire? Also, (Shaker 500) is it in the factory harness or will I need to look elsewhere? I'm confused about what I need to connect, and where, in order for the Dimmer to function properly on the Avic Z2.

Also, I can't seem to find the Reverse Wire. Does anyone know? Right now I have a switch hooked up (as per Tom281), but would also like to have the rear camera also work anytime the car is in reverse as well.

Tomorrow I'm going to try and connect the VSS wire, .. but, on my 2007GT it looks like the firewall passthru is on the drivers side, and not on the passenger side. (maybe I just haven't been able to find it yet.

Side note:I bought an upgraded HD from a guy over in the Avic411 forums, so I was able to delete the initial copyright screens and load a bunch of backgrounds with the HD hooked up to my PC. ... before I installed the new HD in the Z2.

Ray, wish I had taken some pics of my install. Guess this is what happens when I do this at 3 in the morning. The 1st red/white female rca's I used didn't work (could not hear the subs in the door at all. Sounded hollow in the car). The 2nd set, WOW!!! It works so good, I have to change the bass setting on certain songs on my iPod (its too strong). I just don't remember which ones it was Sorry dude.

Hey Alan, I too had questions on which wire to tap into for the dimmer. The harnesses don't work and you have to use a connection elsewhere. Most people use the headlight switch, BUT for me, I had my dad help on this one. He got his tester out, and we found the wire that controls the illumination of the 4-way flasher button when the headlights come on. I used this wire mainly because it was REAL close to the radio and access was easy. When we got the wire connected, I turned on the lights and the screen went to night mode. PERFECT! See if this location may work for you.

And about the VSS? I never connected mine. It is tracking great without it, and the vehicle screen with speed isn't too important to me. If you do decide to hook it up, I wouldn't solder the wire, too dangerous! There is a company called Posi-Products. They make new style connections for wiring. They have one called the Posi-Tap. Its ingenious how it works. It leaves only a pinhole on the wire that is being tapped. So no stripping of the VSS (for me, it was too risky to strip the insulation off, as too deep of a cut into the plastic, and the wire is cut, and this wire controls everything speed related for the car). This wire tap is amazingly simple You may want to find one and use it. Check out the picture and diagram of it below. Also click the link, it goes right to the product on Posi's website.

Thanks Jeff, ... I was thinking the same thing about the VSS, ...
really dont need it ...

and that's excellent about the dimmer,...
one thing, is it possible to be more specific about the location of tap? I'm not getting it ...

A friend of mine hooked up her iPhone. It worked fine as far as music controls, but its screen went black after a few minutes. After unplugging it from my D3, it never came back. She wasn't too happy.

Hey dude, I don't have any pictures when I installed it and don't remember which wire it was. My dad used his tester which had a light on it. You poke the tester where the wires are inserted (and have a ground attached somewhere so you don't short anything out). To see which wire is the flasher button dimmer, turn the parking lights on. The lightbulb on the tester will light up. Then, dim the dash lights with the roller wheel up and down. The lightbulb will go dim and then bright. This tells you the wire its touching is the correct one. Then just take some insulation off, splice in and your set.

The only other thing I could do, would be to take apart my dash for you. If I get the car out today (which I may, its not raining), I can see if I can do this for ya.
