I agree with the mega-restitution idea or a very unpleasant community service, like cleaning filthy public park toilets. Ultimately you want the person who did this to realize how it feels to be the victim of something like this, but the kind of person who does this obviously can't or won't. Therefore necessitating having their butt kicked in some other way. Financial or work related appeal to me because it puts it across in very real terms that you and/or society can at least get something from.

I'm sorry, but that is not a random job, someone was watching you and waited til time was right and did this! When I was 17 years old,I had a 1964 1/2 Mustang ,that was completely customized, was going the following week to have a full diamond tuck interior done,Just had put new wheels and tires on the car, well on a friday night I left my car across the street at a girlfriends house, that night someone keyed the drivers side. from front fender to back quater panel, then to add to insult, they took a can of white spray paint and sprayed the driverside wheels and tires and the keyed part of the car. What made this bad ,the car had just been painted the week before this was done.
This is one reason I'm haveing a complete alarm system put on my 2005,which will worn intruders to stay away and if they get closer it starts taking pictures, starts pageing me and has a loud siren go off.

Man, that really sucks. That first picture could be of my car. In fact most of them could be my car. That makes me sick to think about. I have had 2 different vehicles attacked, one of them twice. It wasn't a very nice car or anything, just 2 different times, in 2 different states, someone decided what was inside the truck was theirs for the taking.

The other time, it was gold spray paint on the side of my brand new Tacoma. Fortunately, that cleaned off easily.

Now that I think about it, it's happened to the Mustang too. Came out one morning to a bunch of static stickers all over the windshield, and that afternoon noticed a shoe-print on the back bumper, presumably from the same punk. Too bad I didn't get a copy of that shoe-print to start comparing with every one in the neighborhood.

You definitely have my sympathies, and hopes that it comes out better than new real soon.

Thanks for the words of support, everyone. It DOES help the pain subside (well, that and the cold beer setting next to the keyboard right now). I would have liked to go get an estimate this afternoon, but the formerly warm and dry West Texas, Midland-Odessa area, is now damp, drizzling and 34 degrees. I'd rather not take any chances of this stuff freezing over before I get back home to Andrews. Most of the people that I work with were just as shocked and shared my grief.

However, there were few, that until today I considered OK, that seemed to derive some sort of pleasure out of this act. I now know which of my coworkers that I can consider friends. I don't suspect any of them of doing this, but still, it's the principle of it. Even if I don't particularly care for someone, I'm not going to revel in their misfortunes. Anyway, enough of that stuff.

I hope to get the ball rolling getting this problem resolved. I hope that by the end of the week I will have the estimate, the police report and the insurance company fully onboard getting my pride and joy repaired. Since she's my only transportation, I will have some kind of loaner for a few weeks. And I fully expect that it will be after the first of the year before I get the 'Stang back.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on the insurance situation. And for the input from the LEO's with their insight. This an excellent community of fellow Mustang aficionados (and car lovers in general) to voice my feelings to. Your comments have indeed helped make a completely messed up situation a whole lot better.

wow, at least is was only paint work and not dents, slashed tires, broken windows...my daily beater, olds cutlass supreme sl, its nothing speacial but its a decent looking car...sombody felt the urge to pull the antenna and it pulled the base creating a bump and a dimple down the rear 1/4 and my antenna to stick at about a 45 degree angle away from the car...i was furious, still am, but only pl pd on this car, no claim...good luck, and dont worry, karma will get them

edit: almost forgot, now would be a great opertunity to have custom work done, for example side scoops, i dont know im tryin to help you stay positive about the situation

I'm a cop and have seen my fair share of keyed vehicles. I've never seen one like yours that was random. Random keyed vehicles (generally) have one long key mark down the side of the car as the jerk walks past the car. They usually are not alone, multiple cars get hit that same night.

This is not random...trust me. It was either done by someone you know, or possibly someone who thought they knew you (mistaken car).
First thing that came to my mind as well. They may return to the site of the crime - maybe not the next Game - but perhaps a few later or the season Finals.

If you suspect a co-worker or person you make contact with on a regular basis, look for signs of differences in behaviour, and lack of eye contact whilst having normal conversation.

Had damage done to a car of mine and come to find out it was an Ex of a Friend of mine whom I did not know. Networking is a good thing. Someone will Rat sooner or later. All because of a suspicious mind and a crime against someone they did not even know.

In finding out who it is, and getting them to confess, the worst punishment on them would be to have them pay for the damages. Resulting from pulling the recorded Police Report. Albeit, I am tempted to think doing the likeness to their Ride would be Justice as well. In service to Justice, I would take the opportunity to give them a Police Record if possible.

Stadiums, Malls, Movies, etc. I will get a ride there somehow. Or pay more of a premium for secured parking. Shame it has to be this way. As told in the Good Word - "Jealousy is the root of all Evil." So too, "Vengence is Mine, I shall repay." The Criminal will get what's coming to them.

Man that sucks. Your rates should not go up for this incident as stated above but all of our rates will go up as an adjustment later on. The repaires have to be paid for by someone and I don't think the insurance companies are out to eat the bills.

Back in college, I was walking between "parties" with a group of people and one acqauintance took the liberty of bending over a car antenna during the walk. It was a quick random thing, he did not know or care who's car it was or even what kind of car it was. I pounced on him with a tight head lock, swung him around a little while pounding him on the head and telling him I never wanted to see him do anything like that again then through him to the ground. He didn't hang around with me too much after that.

I don't really suspect any of my coworkers, I was just kind of caught off guard by their getting some kind of pleasure out of the situation. But I will continue to pay attention to their actions around me. I still think that the idea of a reward poster might help bring the culprit to justice. The offer of money for information might lead to something.

I took half the day off today and went to get my first estimate. Returned to the dealer that I bought the car from and the people at the body shop remembered the car. They were the ones that did all of the custom work before I took final delivery. They remembered the car and were shocked and just as mad as me about what happened. That in itself might turn up some leads, as well. Anyway, the estimate was for $1336 to do the work. I was expecting around $1200. I took that information and was able to complete the police report and get a case number. That allowed me to call the insurance company and get that part going. I expect to see an adjuster by the end of the week.

I asked at the body shop about a time frame to get the car in. Maybe the first week of January. Once again, kinda what I had figured on.

Ok tis the season so I will grant him/her mercy. They are hearby sentanced to be striped naked and tied to a pole in said parking lot with 100 Mustang owners for about 10 minutes. The Mustang owners will be only allowed to use their car keys... (turn about is fair play)

A friend of mine over here had the same thing happen to him. He caught the bastard in the act, keying his brand new Porsche. He beat the living crap out of him, and when the cops arrived they took over and beat some more crap out of the guy. I was kind of shocked to see cops do that (even in this part of the world), but I completly agreed with the punishment. This punk will never do that to a car again. Its a different form of justice, but it works.

I never lock my car and no one ever snatched my Predator or GPS. While they don't cut your hand off in Kuwait, its a still a very long jail sentence (2 year minimum for anything over $50), no community service crap. We need tougher policing back home.

That same friend of mine had his Porsche involved in a hit and run while he was parked. Within a week they found the guy, because by law you cannot fix any body damage to your car without a police report, and the cops matched the paint scrapes to the accident. How great is that!

John, I'm really sorry about your ride, it really hurts just looking at the pics. Real shame, but I'm sure you'll have her back to perfect in no-time.

I caught 3 kids at 2:30 in the morning doing damage to my beater commute car parked in the street. Suffice to say, one got taken away in cuffs and the others **** themselves. Haven't seen any of them since. I really didn't care about the damage only because i caught them.

I feel for you man.....hope whoever did that to your car chokes on a chicken bone.

You tend to want to catch the person responsible and deal with him directly...such as keying the person's face.....but we know that won't happen. I don't think your insurance will go up. Insurance tends only to get raised if your at fault in a traffic accident. I'd take a beater, have a friend drive me, or a cab to your next hockey game.

For me, I have an additional car that I use when I have to park anywhere for a period of time such as Walmart, community centres etc. I had my stang nicked a few times on the right rear side in an area that was not immediately noticeable at a car wash of all things exactly nine days after I got the mustang. One of the wash attendant perps saw some police equipment in the trunk (jacket and police bag) and decided to give me a touch up. Since then I wash the stang myself and do not park in anyplace were I do not have a complete visual of the mustang.

John, I am SO SORRY to read the story and see those pictures. Seeing what those ******* ********* did to your car really makes me upset. Even more so, since we both have the same color combo and such! Really makes me sick to my stomach. Had I walked out and saw someone doing that to my car, I would most likely need a lawyer as I would be booked for assault! Hope the insurance company takes care of you on this. Again, I'm so sorry bud!

Thanks for the kind words, Jeff. Yeah, if I'd walked up on them in the act, I'd probably be in jail, along with them. And your right about our cars, they are almost identical . I still can't understand what kind of lowlife gets some sort of pleasure, or satisfaction, in doing this to another's property. I should hear something back from the insurance by Friday and then I can schedule for repairs.

Yeah, your so right on that. I mean, I've been mad at some people before, but not to the extent that I would resort to do something like key their car. I just couldn't do it! I like cars too much to hurt them. And about the similarity between our cars, its excellent brother! Only the grill emblem, hood and wheels are the real difference from a quick glance. We both even have ducktails, just different brands!
