Please don't use final HP numbers vs price. I'd prefer the GT500 but there are others cars that are better for the same price. The first that comes to mind is the current 08' Corvette. The base model comes with 430HP and will outperform the GT500.

I don't mean to step on toes but those are the facts, Chevy can offer a true sports car with IRS for a similar price.

Actually we are both wrong on price figures the 09' GT500 MSRPs for $43,125.00 while the Vette is up to $48,565.00. For what it is worth the prices are the opposite in real world shopping. I have yet to see a new untitled GT500 sell for less than $45,000 while I have seen new Vettes sell for as low as $43,000.

technically its not exactly the same comparison. you could have said you prefer N/A power, lighter weight and handling at the expense of a $4000 or so premium, 2 rear seats and 70 overall HP and TQ

I look at price, performance level RWD V8 coupes of similar power.

I agree that they are not the same type or car, but sell to the same market. I agree the Corvette is a tad more upmarket, yet it is the better bargain of the two due to current rates. This bargain is because the Corvette is less desirable than the GT500 but facts are facts, they are both performance cars and the Vette outperforms the GT500. I don't look at N/A vs Supercharged I look at bottom line numbers. Maybe I'm a tad bitter because these things have been so hard to get a hold of but if i'm honest with myself I'd personally buy a Corvette over the GT500 if they are selling for the same price, (Chevy is offering huge discounts on the Vette vs. Ford who is not offering any deals on the GT500)

My question is, what is Chevy going to do with the Camaro if they decide to make a GT500 level competitor? It seems that the Camaro "Z28" or whatever they decide to call it may compete with Chevy's own Corvette!

Agreed. The regular 3 Series are the smooth operators that people normally think of about BMWs, though hardly numb nor soft by any means. My E46 M3, though, is surprisingly raw and mechanical feeling, no one would ever mistaken it for a Lexus. The powerful and high revving S54 engine is just this side of a race motor with a savage bark to the exhaust along with a generally very mechanical sound (solid lifters, couple of oil pumps whirring away, etc.). The suspension is rather firm, if supple, and not the cushy ride that some think IRS are only good for. I think most people are rather surprised as to just how serious a performance machine the M3s are.

That is what I find so surprising about the GT500, it is a much cushier ride compared to the 03-04 Cobras. I have driven a couple and I'd wager it gives a more cushy, I may even say refined ride compared to the rawer feeling GT. I don't know if it is the added weight or the tuning of the suspension but I feel the GT500 gives the nicest ride of the current Mustang family.

My E46 M3 had Supersprint headers, 100cpi metallic subtrate cats, midpipe no resonaotor and a Borla muffler...the car sounded wicked..my car..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xf8gxlCaCU

The crappy mic in the camcorder doesn't do it justice.

Well first of all, no you can not, and secondly you would still be short about 70 horsepower...

Base MSRP 2008 Corvette Coupe
$46,100
My friends, loaded was $56,390.

Base MSRP 2008 Mustang Shelby GT500
$41,930
Mine loaded was $44,350...

that is true and you can get more out of the gt500 for less because it already has a blower and a solid engine for boost

I guess you can't, if you don't know where to look. http://www.kerbeck.com/

Secondly, while you are down about 70hp compared to the GT500, the Vette has an almost 700 lbs weight advantage. HP/weight is what matters. You are going to need to mod a GT500 to keep up with an LS3 Vette.

This is exactly why it wouldn't make any logical sense, if Chevy were to build a Camaro based GT500 level competitor. As it would definitely cause a conflict, by competing with their very own Corvette.

And the last thing Chevy needs, is to compete within it's own division.

That being said, it would seem that Chevy already has it's GT500 level competitor in it's Corvette !

Ferrari, Porsche, Bugatti, Corvette, BMW.... all have irs. They all accelerate reasonably well. Pretty much every new car on the market has irs except the Mustang. If mustang is going to compete with the new Camaro it needs HP and IRS.

I HATE SAYING IT, BUT IT'S TRUE.

The Vette is definitely an option...if you dont have a family. Sure I can put my 100 lb dog in the hatch, but where would I put my kids? Sure I dont have any at the time, but when I do, they have to go with me. I'm not saying I would be able to put teenagers back there, but toddlers and newborns, sure.

Wouldnt that be an awesome story to tell. "Yeah, my parents brought me home from the hospital in my Dad's mustang, yeah this one we are driving right now."

Dont say it then. because its not true. Give the mustang 400 horses and lets wage some war. Twenty mustangs versus twenty Camaros. Dont give them to journalists(as they are biased). Give them to normal people and dont tell them that the 'stang has an SRA or that the Camaro has the IRS. Then run a bunch of different roads as well as some tracks and the strip. Then lest see who wins. Even if the Camaro wins, I bet its not the end all, be all.

I don't have kids and wouldn't put a 100lbs dog in my car. Frabkly, my Mustang is a 2 passenger car. The rear isn't an option to adults and most kids. My drivers seat is about 1" off of the rear seat. It would be a pain to put a child seat back there.

No one said it would be easy. I dont need to sit back as far as you either, Im six foot. I would put my dog in my car as he is my kid. He is a yellow lab that is almost white in color. He would do anything I ask. (no peanut butter jokes please) Always happy to see me, always ready for a car ride. He comes to work with me EVERYDAY.
In my last post, I mentioned that no teenagers would be harmed by forcing them to sit in the back. But as far as putting a child seat back there, it would be ok. And its still an option unlike the vette and the associated snobbery that goes with it.
