My home is a little emptier tonight... One of my dogs, Bernie, crossed the bridge at 4:10 this afternoon.
He was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease and had a thryoid condition, in the last year he also developed diabetes and lost his eyesight.
Up until this afternoon, he was fine; I took all of the dogs out for a walk this afternoon. Bernie had this hacking cough last week and was diagnosed with a respiratory infection. He took the course of meds prescribed by our Vet and was doing better, today the cough came back and it was worse. I took him to the vet this afternoon, and from the time we got home from the walk until the vet appointment I could tell something was wrong. Normally when I call the dogs, they come right over. I had to get Bernie and carry him out to my truck.
His lungs were filling with fluid and he had a temperature of 105.6. The vet took some X-rays and discovered a very large tumor in Bernie's right lung and another large tumor on his spleen. There was nothing that could be done for him.
I called Trish (my wife); she called my son Jon who had just gotten out of class at the Academy and they came to the vet's office to say goodbye.
I held Bernie in my arms as Dr. Patil gave him the injection that ended his suffering. He died peacefully.
Rest easy, Bernie... I'll see you at the Rainbow Bridge...

Poor bubba I'm sorry buddy...
My dogs are getting up there, 12 and 14. The 14yo girl is losing her teeth. Breaks my heart. She still has a spunk in her step though, and is pretty healthy otherwise. I still make sure I kiss her before bed and hold her when I can, because I know one day she's probably not going to wake up in the morning when I go to take them out...
