GenCorp Inc.’s stock dropped sharply Wednesday after RBC Capital analysts suggested a link between the company and the Orbital Sciences Corp. rocket that exploded was likely.
The stock GY, -5.41% fell 6.9% through morning trade. Less than two hours after the open, volume was already more than two-thirds the full-day average.
In a note to clients, RBC analysts said that while it’s not clear what caused Orbital Sciences’ Antares rocket to explode shortly after take off Tuesday evening, they believed “a likely suspect” is the AJ-26 main engine. The rocket, which was unmanned, was carrying supplies for the international space station.
The firm noted that those engines are decades-old NK-33 Russian rocket engines that have been refurbished by Aerojet Rocketdyne, which is a division of GenCorp, as an option to power the Antares rocket. RBC also noted that one of the refurbished AJ-26 engines exploded in May during testing.
GenCorp did not immediately return calls for comment.
Before Wednesday’s selloff, GenCorp’s shares had climbed 13% in a little over two weeks. That rally included a 3% jump on Oct. 13 after the company reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings, and a 3.2% rally on Oct. 17 after Aerojet Rocketdyne was selected to provide power and propulsion for the 2020 Mars Rover mission. ]Meanwhile, Orbital Sciences’ stock ORB, -15.74% tumbled 15% early Wednesday, but had been down as much as 18% at 6 1/2-month low of $24.80 earlier in the session.
