Tomorrow looks like a decent day for a drive but I'm sure everyone and their buick driving brother will be clogging up the roads. Need to go way out away from the herds of cattle.

So Scott... do VFA's have authority to do a drill on private property without the owner's permission? Woke up to 3 trucks and crew spraying water on the wooded lots behind my property behind the barn. Thought $7k of hay was about to go up when I looked out the window! (A neighbor was burning slash the other day.) Went out and they are spraying another lots trees (owner is 300 miles away). The new fire chief (of 2 wks) says they're doing a drill to pump 10k gallons of water - which takes a couple of trips and a portable tank. Wants to make their presence known and will do this throughout the community. But geez - just because it looks like 'woods' and there's no house on it, doesn't mean it isn't privately owned. 75% of this subdivision is owned by absentee owners but some think they can just tromp all over it cause there's no house. Apparently the fire chief thinks the same. I don't know how I feel about that.

I don't think that's something we'd have authority to do for a drill. Now if you are doing an ISO inspection, it's up to the inspector to pick the place so he could technically choose a privately owned property. For a drill though, that doesn't sound right. I know we sure as heck wouldn't do that. We'd talk to land owner first but mainly we use places repeatedly that we have agreements with.
Either way, to come on private property without permission and track all over it and pump water is just out of bounds.
This new fire chief is renting property and maybe he thinks these acres are part of his lease.
I don't want to cause trouble but in the past all kinds of individuals have disrespected private property and it has taken years to get it through people's heads that just because a house isn't on it doesn't mean its OK to snowmobile through it etc. Esp when there are thousands of acres of public forest service land that neighbors the subdivision. duh.
Now during an emergency situation all bets are off but at that point I don't think the landowner would mind. I've stopped and used people's boat launches at thier house before to fill trucks up and they've come out and been like wtf. I kindly explain I am refilling for a house fire in such and such place, they usually offer a hand if needed at that point. If they had an issue though, since it is during an emergency situation, tough luck, they could be arrested for hindering an operation.
