People used to sit up with the dead also (especially in the south). The body would be kept in the home and people would take turns sitting with the body until it was buried. I always heard from the old folks in my family that it was to keep rats from getting to the body before it was buried, but it became a tradition here in the south that lasted long after you had to worry about stuff like that.
I can even remember when I was little having family members brought back from the funeral home after they were prepared and put in the living room for viewing for a couple of days until they were buried. It really freaked me out. I was about 5 and can remember having my great grandmothers coffin open in her living room while all of the family and friends came by to pay their respects and bring food. Really weird having her in there all night, I didn't sleep a wink.
Don't know about other places, but bringing food to the funeral home and to the family is still done in the south, but not as much as it was up until about 20 years ago. There would be so much fried chicken, casseroles, vegetables, and homemade deserts that you couldn't find a place to put them all. People would be at the funeral home fixing a huge plate to eat. Seemed normal to me growing up because it had always been like that. When I got older and met people from other parts of the country, they were mortified that people did that, hahaha. It was just one of those traditions like sitting up with the dead that stuck. It was done to ease the burden on the family of having to worry about meals. 100 years ago there weren't restaurants every where, and people had 8 or ten kids to feed so the neighbor women all cooked for them so they could grieve and get the body laid to rest, and the men helped out with the chores, garden, livestock, chopping wood, etc.
This concludes your southern history lesson for the day. Pop quiz sometime next week.

Interesting. I remember when my grandpa died, a couple people brought food for the family that we had downstairs in the funeral home. No pot lucks though....

People don't do that everywhere? WTF
Seriously.
I would always get sick of having to be nice and eating all the food from the different people even though I didn't like it.

Hey I been a member since 8/2007.....just not an active one.
Meeee Toooooooo!!!!!!!!! I hope I get them I have been a very good boy
My family still does this, it just seems like the right thing to do. Knowing how busy you are at those times it's nice to have someone make a meal for you to just eat.
I remember when my uncle passed back 10 years ago now we got dinners from the neighbors and close friends for about a week. My mother being the only sibling it was a lot of stress on her and was just one less thing she had to worry about.
I had only been dating my GF for about 3 months when her uncle (41) passed suddenly of a heart attack. Her father is the oldest and his parents are very old, he took car of everything and my mother made them a huge pan of lasagna. They still talk about it to this day saying how good it was. I think they were just glad to have a hot non-takeout meal.

I know when my neighbor's husband died a couple of years ago and people were beginning to come over I went and mowed her yard for her so she wouldn't be embarrassed. I thought she might not understand and that I was being rude, but she told my wife later that she was very appreciative of it and really appreciated not having to worry about it for a while because her husband used to do the yard.
