The idea that rear wheel drive cars are a nightmare in the winter is a myth that has risen from a generation of folks who have grown up on FWD cars. Safe winter driving is all about traction and skill. Good winter tires and sand bags will take take of the traction. Experience and getting to know your car will handle the skill.
But as far as making life easier in snow. TIRES, TIRES, and TIRES. Once I got real snow tires instead of all-seasons I stopped using weight over the axle. Didn't need it anymore.
Oh and it's funny when you can handle a mustang in snow because there will be these idiots who think they can take advantage of the snow on the ground... it's funny when they fail

It's not a myth if they truly are a danger driving a RWD car in the ice/snow. In fact, they prove it to be very real when they go from a FWD, automatic vehicle to a RWD, manual transmission. I wouldn't want those people driving a RWD car anywhere near me. Those of us who drive RWD vehicles are accustomed to the style of driving necessary in icy conditions. Those who grew up driving Prius-like cars aren't. I understand your point, but those people truly are no less dangerous just because they learned on FWD's and automatics.
By the way, I don't think anyone who freely admits they drove a Prius can be called uber-manly.

Winter wheels/tires?
I know it's far in the future yet, but does anyone have a suggestion for wheels/tires for the winter time for a brembo car?
Something that just occured to me, since the brembo cars run summer only tires.
I didn't have an issue last winter in DC running my summer-only 19's in my GTO, but then again I saw snow..... once.
However, to be better prepared this year, I'd like to play it safe and have a dedicated set of all seasons for winter. (I had genuine snows for the GTO)
Is the 18" GT500 wheel pretty much my only option with the big brakes?
Something that just occured to me, since the brembo cars run summer only tires.

I am not sure about the wheels, but I would recommend you go to Tire Rack.com and plug in your car for all options.
They do tire and wheel packages. I have a package for my GT/CS with four full winter Blizzak's, which are great in ice, and snow. Tire Rack will deliver the package to an installer in your area if you don't want the hassle of putting them on yourself, otherwise they UPS them to your house, mounted and balanced. I put mine on the day after they arrived.
FYI..I am not affiliated with Tire Rack, just a satisfied customer since the 1980's.

Do they charge to ship to the distributor or his house? What if he found tires online and got someone to price match? Discount tire honored the online price I found on discounttires.com and I didn't pay shipping. Just trying to save him some cash.

I did the GT500 wheels and Blizzaks for winter. Got them both shipped to the house and went locally for the install. Went to Buy Ford Racing for the wheels and Tire Rack for tires. I believe they are LM60s, but I'd have to look. Performed flawlessly in the snow.

We run Goodyear Ultragrip GW3 on our SHO and used them originally on a 2006 Charger RT. They transformed our Charger from the winter death machine to a slip ad skid free winter car. On the Taurus they are awesome. They were OE winter cop car tires on Charger cop cars in several mountain states.

Like a lot of others, I bought a set of winter tires/wheels from the Tire Rack. Cost me about $1,700 total, using Ford Racing Wheels and Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 winter tires, and they worked great. Can't go wrong with 'em.

But no, I totally understand the need to drive it daily in the winter.... I get my stuff from Tire rack...and I usually speak to the tire specialists there, and they guide me through all of it, then just buy it if it's on sale.

I'd be all about the 2nd car, but it was a pain in the *** enough w/ our HOA and neighbors when we had the GTO and the Beetle. I'd have tow notices on whichever car was parked on the street if it wasn't moved regularly.
My car goes on the driveway, her motorcycles go in the garage.
Our HOA is a pain. Personally I think they are finding ways to ***** -- i.e. discriminate. Maybe that way, they can get the lez couple to want to sell the house and move elsewhere. At least, that's my theory. But yeah, pain enough. Winter isn't *terrible* here. I might consider switching the tires on the car out to all seasons instead of the summer only rubber maybe. But having had snow tires on my GTO, I know how freakin' amazing snow tires can be, hence why I want snow tires.
Thanks everyone for at least confirming GT500 wheels will work for winter.
