with winter soon approaching

So with winter soon approaching and my mustang a DD, i've been thinking about some steps to take to make winter driving a little less dangerous.

Never had a RW drive car, always front wheel. Michigan winters can get a bit dicey from time to time.

Ill be putting my stock rims and tires back on and was considering changing my tune to the 87 octane tune. Any thoughts on this?

the tune would be a good idea. I would get a pair or set of blizzaks for the car. I would also wax it s a few times.

I hear hands down make sure you use winter tires (NOT the stock all seasons on the vehicle).

Winter? You mean the few months it gets way down into the 50s?

In all seriousness, winter tires would definitely be a good idea. All seasons are generally mediocre at all seasons, for Michigan winters you want tires designed for snow and ice. I'll stick with my summer only's year 'round.

It depends on the package you purchased. The stock GT comes with all seasons I believe.

My stocks are Pirelli All Seasons - says right on them, if that is what you consider them "all season" - I hear they are not really suitable compared to a real all season tire. Could be the difference in where the car is bought/sold

i went through two new england winters with the pzero nero all seasons... best i can say is the tires were ok. during deeper snow during the commute where the plows couldnt keep up they were a handful especially on grades. if i do RWD again I will go with dedicated performance snows like pilot alpines (i have for my S4) or blizzaks.

the p zero's are not good enough. I drove many winters with them and 200 lbs of sand in the trunk.

It's doable. Ive spent many seasons with stock all seasons and they've always pulled me through. Then again im in NYC where roads are plowed pretty efficiently and never have to take it though more than 4-5 ins. Your mileage may vary.

It can get pretty cold here in MI.

Hm considering i just bought new rims and tires for the summer/fall/spring months... i dunno if ill have funds to get winter tires before winter actually comes along.

but good to know.

This has been discussed quite a bit.

My suggestion - ditch the all seasons and get dedicated winter wheels and tires. You won't even need sand in the back and you'll have an easier (and safer) time driving on snow this winter.

If you are considering a full winter tire, then you will need all four of them. I took the 19's off and put 18" SVT wheels with Blizzaks all around. These tires really come into their own as the temperture drops below 45 degrees (F). The colder it gets, the gripper they are. I have been through two winters, in Western South Dakota with them, and they are well worth the money. They handle very well in snow, and ice, which sold me.

I'm also planning on getting a full set of wheels & snow tires for mine when it comes in. I live in central PA (Harrisburg) and while we got a mild winter last year, I can't imagine going through the winter with summer tires on.

I'm thinking I'll go with some 18" AMR wheels and a set of 4 Blizzaks. I'm hoping they'll last about 3 winters, so it should be reasonably cost-effective. Maybe a couple bag or 2 of sand/salt in the trunk as well.

For those of you who run a separate set of winter wheels, did you get a separate set of TPMS sensors as well? What are the consequences of running without them? I'd like to avoid the cost if it's just a small nagging light for a few months out of the year.

I've used Blizzaks on my Charger R/T (RWD) for several winters in Michigan - winter was covered nicely. Other tires, whether the "all season" that came stock, or summer tires, was a very bad idea.
Another nice perk with the Blizzaks is their longevity - most of time time it was dry pavement and I continued to drive very spirited, and they still lasted quite a long time. They do have a more rapid transition upon breaking loose around corners, but it's not terrible considering they are winter tires.
