Many of the rumors in the past few months have been regarding the 2015 Mustang, but as we initially reported last month, Ford will first unveil a redesigned Mustang in 2013 before we see the next generation pony car from the Blue Oval. Very little has been reported about what changes are in store for the 2013 Mustang, but our inside sources have given us new details about what to expect from the upcoming model year.
First up, the 2013 Mustang will be getting a fairly significant redesign, with many styling cues from the current Shelby GT500 making their way onto the front of the car including the larger, protruding upper grille and smaller, rounder lower grille. This aligns with the mysterious Mustang test mule that was caught on the streets of Dearborn back in April.
As a modern touch, LED lights will be used, most likely for the fog lights in the lower front fascia. Many Mustang fans will also be happy to know that the controversial taillight design first seen on the 2010 Mustang have also gone on the chopping block for 2013, giving way to a lights that run straight across the back of the car rather than angling towards the front.
As far as powertrains go, our sources say that they will remain the same for 2013, a 5.0L V8 and the 3.7L V6, although Ford will be giving a slight bump in horsepower to the Mustang GT (no word on the V6) to be more on par with the Camaro SS. The exact horsepower figure for the Mustang GT is unknown, but expect it to come in right around 425. As we reported back in March, the 2013 Shelby GT500 will also be getting an increase in horsepower to as much as 620.
Finally, we earlier speculated that the 2013 Mustang would debut in November at the L.A. Auto Show, and our sources have confirmed this. Expect to see the redesigned 2013 Mustang right around November 16-17, the press days for the L.A. Auto show.

Some good and some bad here. First off styling the 2013 off the Shelby is a mistake! Part of what was done so well for the 2010 was giving the 3 models their distinct looks. The V-6, GT and GT500 all looked very different as they should! If the GT looks like the GT500 we are going into Camaro territory where the ZL1 looks almost the same as the SS. Going back to history the Shelby's from 67 forward were very different asthetically from the standard Mustangs. It doesn't sound like the GT500 is changing much at all from reports so this is not a change in the right direction.
The redesigned rear will obviously make many people happy. The HP bump for the GT is a good idea. In a 1/2 mile race the SS displacment at 6.2 liters really starts to show as the Camaro will beat the GT in most circumstances. The 2012 RS has 326 HP, but I haven't seen any comparison yet by auto mags so I don't know if the Mustang V-6 will need a bump or not.
Since the order banks open in Oct. I am surprised by a mid Nov. reveal. I honestly would have expected early Oct. at least in print or online.

Wow, this is exciting. I love the look of the GT500 front end. I could care less if the models are not as distinct in looks... means none to me. I'm sure the GT500 will still have its distinct clues, it just may not me so obvious this time.

I doubt we'd see a 14 BOSS. Everything has pointed at a run for 12 & 13. And we really haven't seen many special/limited edition Mustangs go past a 2 year run (outside of the obvious Shelby or Cobra runs).

The only current special edition that has gone less than 2 years was the Bullitt. 2014 will see a Boss. How do you think they recoupe the R&D cost? If Ford can make money on it they will sell it.

As with the first iteration, the new Boss Mustang will be built for two model years only, and just 4,000 cars will be produced each year: 3,500 street cars and 500 “R” race cars.”

13' mule sightings
Well I was driving home from visiting my lady last week and spotted a covered up Mustang mule on the freeway near Dearborn. I managed to snap some pictures on my iPhone.
Also as I was leaving the Woodward Dream Cruise on Saturday evening I spotted a covered up Mustang as well, this time in black and white camo'd stickers. It was thunderstorming hard and I didn't have a chance to snap any pictures but the rear end shape looked very similar to the mule in these pictures as well.
What does it all meannnnn Basil?
From what I could see the rear diffusor is partly painted as well, much like the 3Dcarbon rear diffusor is. The rear axleback exhaust also appeared to be the same as off the Boss 302. The hood also appeared to be higher, but that could be down to the covers on the car and a visual illusion.
