2010-2014 Mustang Information on The S197 {GenII}

Why did you pick the 'Stang over the Camaro, Challenger, Genesis, G37, etc?

Genesis coupe - not in the running, do not like the looks (well at least the front)

Accord V6 - like the looks (especially the stance) but my fiancee told me I can't buy such a plain sedan looking import

Camaro V6 - test drove an automatic that was speed limited at like 45, pretty impressed with the ride quality and like the body style but the interior is eh and the visibility sucked, the window sticker was on the passenger side of the windshield because they couldn't fit it on the side windows, talk about no visibility after that

Altima - test drove a V6 auto while shopping with my dad for his car and it was slow and uninspiring

Mustang 99 - bought my V6 in 2003 and now after 150,000 miles a bunch of appearance mods and a ton of memories later, had a chance to get an 09 GT which I had lusted over (05+'s) since '04

Mustang 09 - new car with a warranty, yay! a little bigger car than I'm used to and prefer but overall a great package

Edit: oh yeah, 350/370Z no back seat, that's a no go for me

My dad had an 86(I think) red 5.0 with t-tops. I was supposed to get it when I got my license. That started my love for the mustang. He traded it in about 2 years before I got my license.

Besides, I can't drive any of the others off the showroom floor with 550 HP!

Genesis coupe - Like the car a lot but is out of my price range. Even if it was I wouldn't buy it because one of my friend has one (G37) and it is also my best friend's dream car and he is thinking of buying one.

Accord V6 - I already have a 2000 Honda Accord Coupe, I wanted something different more fun.

Camaro V6 - Test drove the V6 & SS. Personally I think it looks better than the Mustang but the car is just too heavy and you can feel it. Also didn't like the Lexus's like suspension (combined with the weight and it feels like driving an Impala), interior is too plain & visibility sucks.

Altima - Pretty much all reviews I read say the Accord is better in every way including handling (that is not saying much) so I took it out of my list.

Challenger - Nice looking car but it is Dodge and V6 version is way underpowered.

BMW, Audi, MB, etc... - Out of my price range

Growing up I always wanted a 'muscle car' which was inspired by a few friends that had 5.0s. When I was in my teens my father always said the insurance would be too much and it wasn't practical. When I started getting to an age where insurance wouldn't rape me and I had the $$ to buy my own car, I got a DUI. You can only imagine what happened to my insurance then. So I stuck with grandpa cars for a few years.

One of my grandpa cars died on me and I was in a pinch so I leased a Grand Prix. Sporty....but not a true sports car. But I had major issues with mileage since I drove alot. So I was forced to dump my lease using GM's pull ahead program and I got into a G6. After 4 years with that car, I finally decided it was time to get something new. I was finally free to get what I wanted.

Well then my GF bought a Lexus IS350. I really like that car and man was it fun to drive. Sporty, great ride, nice build quality....top of the line. So I started leaning toward that route. Thats when I was looking at the G37. I figured that would be my next car.

Fast foward a few months and my GF's uncle brings by his new Camaro 2SS and throws me the keys. Thats when I determined I needed to fill that void in my life and get a 'muscle car'. While I like the look of the Camaro, I wasn't too impressed with how it felt inside. I just didn't feel comfortable in the car.

So i started looking around and my buddy turned me on to the Mustang. I pretty much wrote off the mustang 10 years ago with the style change so I didn't even think about it. Then they announced the 5.0 and it caught my attention.

So I sat back and thought where am I at in life? Do I want that muscle car to fill the void and have a fun AMERICAN ride? Or am I ready to jump to a foreign luxury sedan and have a car that is very practical for me and the family (GF, I, 3 y/o, and 15 y/o).

Obviously I chose the Mustang. If I need any extra room, we have the Lexus or our '98 Honda Passport SUV.

So the void has been filled and man am I glad I did. I would really like to keep this car for 12 years so my daughter can make it her first. But at the rate i'm putting on miles with my cars, that may be hard to do. In 5 years or so when I'm ready for a new ride, hopefully Lincoln or Cadillac will have something that can fit my desire for a nice sporty luxury sedan that doesn't cost an arm/leg.

I was looking at a F250 King Ranch. Long story short I threw the idea of a Mustang by my wife as a joke. When she said she'd be okay with it I blew it off as nonsense.

Then I found out about the 5.0. End of story. She even let me keep my station wagon, which she hates with a fiery passion.

I cross shopped the Camaro, Challenger, and a few other options. Both V6 and V8 models.

Challenger was tempting but seemed overpriced for what you get. The V6 didn't have a manual transmission option, which automatically ruled it out for me. And having to pay extra for the manual transmission on the V8 models was the nail in the coffin.

The Camaro was also very tempting compared against the 2010 Mustangs. Visibility was a concern. But the Mustang is my heritage and has some cool features like Sync. Then when I heard the news of the new drivetrains on the 2011 Mustangs, that put Mustang over the top.

I also considered getting an old muscle car I could fix up, but the prices on old muscle cars turned out to be waaaay above what I expected them to be. Seems like back in the late 80's you used to be able to pick up an old muscle car for a couple of grand, but now you'll be lucky to get a junk yard salvage for that. I wasn't about to pay 10 grand for a beat up unreliable old muscle car needing thousands more in restoration. I won't dish out that kind of money unless it's new or something completely exotic.

I looked around at some other brands for new cars, but nothing really peaked my interest (well, the Pontiac G8 did, but conditions weren't right to get one -- Pontiac was going under and G8's were hard to find). Also, I'm the type that likes to buy American, so foreign brands would have to really outclass the competition for me to fly a foreign flag.

Lots of good reasons here but I can't help but be skeptical by how many of you cite the bailouts and your desire to punish the companies that accept them as one of your primary reasons.

You guys do know that Ford secured a line of credit but was able to sell off a whole bunch of assets and just barely squeek by, right?

I grew up around Mopar Muscle cars and could identify any Dodge or Plymouth hotrod by the age of 7. I have an old Dart Sport V8 in my garage and I'll probably always have a Mopar to play with... but there are a different set of priorities when it comes to a daily driver...

So as an adult I mostly drove sports cars and was an avid autocrosser (though only mediocre behind the wheel )...but I developed a strong bias for the lightest possible car I could find... and in this category, the Mustang is the champ. Not only does it benefit from its lighter weight in all performance measures but these cars seem to be tuned to emphasize that fact. They're so much lighter on their feet than the Challenger and Camaro... add in the VASTLY better visibility and you get the feeling that you're in a much smaller car, which is partially true.

So... the Mustang GT is the "sports car of pony cars" and it won my admiration on those grounds first. Add in that the new motor is looking to be the new king of the hill and the gorgeous, muscular yet subtle styling and the other machines didn't have a shot.

I've had a 67, a 99 GT and now a 2011 5.0 and there was never a question about driving anything else but a MUSTANG. The new 5.0 just reconfirms that feeling!!!!

Here are my reasons:

I've always had good luck with the quality of Fords. I've owned 8 Fords, 1 Mercury, 1 Chevy and 1 Toyota. I believe Fords are made sturdier than GMC's

I wanted a convertible. It was really my only reason for buying a car. So that rules out some of the other cars.

I wanted a cool car. (I didn't want to have to get a Sebring, PT Cruiser, VW Beetle just to get a convertible.)

I preferred having a back seat. Note I didn't say a 4-seater. That was secondary to having a back seat. In other words I wanted the back seat mainly for storage.

I try to buy American

I like the fact that the Mustang has power and good gas mileage.

I didn't want to spend too much (I ain't made of money :-) )

I've liked most years of Mustangs. I wanted one in high school.

I preferred a car with some trunk space. I liked another convertible that didn't have a back seat or any trunk space.

I preferred an automatic convertible top.

I'm sure there's something I am missing.

Nice...
It says so much that the designers have managed to hold onto the loyalty of folks like you who have owned cars from such different eras.

I bet that wouldn't be the case if the Probe replaced the Mustang as originally planned.

What do you work in (scumbag) Harry Reid's office? LOL
Mulally had the foresight of a good CEO to revamp the company for decades of future worldwide success... long before there was any hint of the implosion.
There have been similar posts by others that make it sound like Ford had to hock the joint just to make payroll - and that premise is totally false.

SEN. HARRY REID (D-NV): "Isn't it a good thing today in America that we have an automobile manufacturing sector? If it had been up to them [Republicans], General Motors would be gone. If it were up to them, Ford Motor Company would probably be gone. Chrysler definitely would be gone."

Ford did not take any bailout money from the government.

My hope is that people realize the amount of money that every other government in the world gives to their auto companies. Anyone who buys a foreign car over a domestic one because "they didn't get government aid" is a fool.

I wanted an 8 cylinder, so that took the Genesis out of the running. I liked the Camaro until I sat inside of it. I didn't like the sight lines on it and the wife hated the interior. The wife wouldn't even sit in the Challenger for some reason. She took one look at it and said "no".

Settled on the 2010 Mustang because of the rebates and financing that I was able to get. Was thinking of going 2011, but wasn't sure what type of financing would be available on them plus what type of rebates. I regret going with the 2010 every once in a while, but I love the car and don't think I would trade it in. At least not until 2014!

I already posted on this thread, but what you're all saying rang some bells for me.

It's made in America - definitely a factor. I've driven Toyotas for years, but I think Ford is doing a great job and should be rewarded. I love that the car is built in Michigan. I hope my purchase helps American workers and our economy.

The gas mileage - although I'm keeping my Prius, so mileage in the Ford doesn't have too big an impact, it was a factor in my decision. I definitely like that a 400-HP car can get 26 MPG. I do wonder, though, if Ford can keep cranking up the MPG to meet Federal standards over the coming years. I imagine if there was a way to take weight off the car, mileage could approach 30 in the GT and 35 in the V6, and I wouldn't be surprised if Ford is working on that.

I've owned 23 Mustangs, my first being a '66 Fastback. Other than some trucks and a Pinto station wagon (with a 302) every car I've ever owned was a Mustang.

Quick Reply: Why did you pick the 'Stang over the Camaro, Challenger, Genesis, G37, etc?
