Wow....I really like those a lot Patrick. Same wheel you sent me a pic of a couple of months ago? Very different than most wheels you see here. They have an old skool vibe to them, like a mash-up between Halibrand Kidneys and Radir 5 spokes. Can't wait to see them mounted.

Nice, interesting design! I like it! I searched the Bings, the Googles, and the Yahoos and couldn't find a single picture of them on a Mustang, so it looks like you'll be one of the firsts. I really hope they look good on the car. I've seen a lot of great wheels that look bad on 10-14 S197's. It's just the lines of our cars I think. Fingers crossed!

He's been taking his time with planning the P-51 theme and I suspect he's thought long and hard about the wheels. As soon as I saw them after the powder coating, my reaction was how well they'll go with the design that he'd described to me.
Without even seeing them on the car I'm certain they'll look perfect with the P-51 Mustang cues.
I'm curious as to how he's going to handle the black and white D-Day stripes. He's already working on a pretty d@mn good idea for nose art.

Thanks guys! I've only seen two pics, both on Centerline's Instagram of S197s (05-09 at that) with these wheels, neither he staggered fitment, and one has the all chrome. They both had tires that were too small too, so I haven't really gotten a good look at them on our cars. I'm hoping for the best.
I can't wait for the knock off center caps to come. I had some leftover gunmetal plastidip, so I'm going to do the red parts of these center caps for now. It probably won't match exactly, but it'll be good enough for the Cars and Coffee on Sunday.
I've been waiting for my license plate to come in, to do the invasion stripes. I think it'll all tie in together at that point.
Here is how the wheels started...

More than any other car style, feature, or color, wheels and tires are the single most important design element of a car in my opinion, and it's what observers will notice first. I think that this is even more critical when creating a unique theme like Patrick wants to do.
He's been taking his time with planning the P-51 theme and I suspect he's thought long and hard about the wheels. As soon as I saw them after the powder coating, my reaction was how well they'll go with the design that he'd described to me.

A quick history lesson: Invasion stripes were painted on all airplanes participating in the Normandy invasion on the night of June 4th, 1944. They were applied on the top and bottom surfaces of the airplanes to allow ground forces to quickly identify friend from foe. It worked extremely well. There were no plans to remove them however, the Luftwaffe quickly learned to use these stripes to their advantage as well. After airbase commanders began reporting increased aerial attacks from the Luftwaffe, theater command issues a directive to remove the stripes. Well, you can imagine what happened next, right? Increased friendly fire from allied ground troops! Quickly a new directive was issues requiring invasion stripes be reapplied to the bottom and lower side surfaces of the aircraft in the theater of operations. Not all airplanes had them. For instance, our freshly restored Mustang, Sierra Sue II was delivered to the 9th Air Force, 370th Fighter Group in Belgium in early 1945 and were never applied to her. Sierra Sue II is widely accepted as the most authentically restored P-51 D in existence. We went to great lengths and expense to ensure that. One of the primary reasons for this is, of the 230ish P-51’s in existence, as near as we can tell, there are only around 12 that have actual WWII combat history. That makes her a pretty rare and special old girl.

I removed the red center cap from the outer black cap. I then had an idea...the inner cap looked to be the same size as my stock caps, which I've never removed btw. I drove down to my storage unit, popped one out and VOILA! It fits. Perfectly. Like it was meant to be there. This is awesome!

Here's a sneak peek... I wasn't going to post until they were on the car, but I've been waiting for these to be done for forever!!
I ordered the knockoff center caps that weren't available when I ordered them, so the black/red ones won't be on there when they get mounted. I'll hopefully get them mounted on the tires tomorrow and on the car Saturday, along with my new (to me, there's that used factor again haha) H&R Super Sport springs. I really wanted to bag it this year, but we're planning our wedding now, so maybe next year! Either way, I'm going a little lower and less stiff on the springs.
Soon, I'll drop off my BMR suspension bits that I've been sitting on, to be powder coated the same matte gray as the wheels. It's all coming together guys! After I get my DDAYP51 legacy plate, which should be some time in August, I'll do the D-Day invasion stripes and star logo on the quarter panels and call it good for this year.

Beautiful, and those Magnum 500's are to die for....best looking wheel ever. I wish someone would make a 19" replica Magnum...heck, I'd even step down to 18" tires if that was the largest available. I'm not talking about someone's interpretation of what a modern Magnum 500 would look like. I'd want an exact replica.
