Corvette tranny isn't a TR6060, it is a rear mounted transaxle that uses some of the same internals and is based on the TR6060 but is not really a TR6060.

Err, pretty much everyone explicitly calls that Corvette's transmission a Tremec TR-6060.

I guess it goes to show you can make a transmission into a lot of different things, call it the same thing, and yet still have it come out totally different.

This as well, Tremec may not have had the capacity to tailor the gear set to the 5.0, not to mention the Tremec is a double OD wide ratio trans - perfectly suited to the 500+ HP/TQ in the GT500

Disagree on the GT500 being smoother than the GT. Again, reverse takes two hands.

I've test driven the '11 GT as well as an '09 GT500. The 11 is certainly smoother, although I wouldn't say the GT500 was all that bad. Didn't have a problem getting into R. Now I sat in '11 GT500 PP recently, and that shifter was awesome. Granted, I didn't drive it, but I would offer that it is the best stock shifter I've ever tried, almost felt like an aftermarkert piece.

I'll make a video of me shifting a 2011 Gt500 today, I'm not a very big guy. 5'7" 140lbs, it doesn't take much effort.

My MT82 doesn't like to be shifted quickly. Just this morning it crunched on a 5-6 upshift! It shifted, but not without a little complaining. To make sure I had the clutch completely to the floor, I shifted back to 5 (OK) and then, with the clutch pedal ALL THE WAY down, I did another fast 5 to 6 shift. CRUNCH. WTF?!?

If I'd wanted a SLOW shifting tranny, I'd have stuck with my Honda Accord. So this is yet another thing to add to my list of things to bring my car back to the dealer for....

According to this site the TR6060 offers many different gear configurations. Ford could have had them gear it the same as the MT82.

Thanks, but I'm already quite familiar with the specs of the MT82, TR6060, and various other manual transmissions that have been in Mustangs over the years. My question was in reference to why "The TR6060 is more like a 5-speed than a 6-speed", as stated by dmhines.

The reason I say it's more like a 5-speed ... is because the gearing is similar to the TR3650 ... but with an extra overdrive ....

For peformance driving ... I would rather have 5 speeds + 1 overdrive ... instead of 4 speeds with 2 overdrives.

How often would you actually use 6th Gear on a TR6060 ????

On an MT82 you would always use 6th gear.

In my 2010 .. I have never been driving down the highway at 75 MPH and said .. wow ... I wish I had another overdrive .... 1 overdrive is fine for me.

Under everyday driving? Actually a fair amount of the time, 5th gear actually sees the lowest use in my car since I generally skip from 4th to 6th.

That that kinda proves my point .. you have a 5-speed ...

Who needs more than 1 overdrive ???

Ok, so that is your preference. I get that, and actually share a similar preference. But I disagree with your assertion that a 6 speed is more like a 5 speed simply because it has 2 OD gears vice 1.

FWIW, in both my 99 T/A and 04 Cobra (T56 trannies.....2 OD gears), I used 6th gear anytime I was cruising on the highway.

I have to agree. I had a double overdrive 6 speed in my Audi and often found myself either driving in 5th or shifting from 4th to 6th. The extra gear really didn't afford me any improvement in driving legally. Now if we had an unlimited speed on the freeway that would be a different story and a second overdrive to get use at 100+ would have been nice and economical.

All I can say is that my MT82 is absolutely perfect, it just slides right through the gears as fast as I want it to. Never even had trouble open palming 2-3 or 4-5.
